I understand that it's British and assumingly somewhat tight, but as it is now- any smaller then it'd be uncomfortable. I can feel it restrict my movement if I bring my arms up or very slightly if I cross my arms.

Right now, the sleeves end right up to my hands and the top of the zipper, (not the buttons), has very little slack in my neck when zipped up. This is good fit, right? I debating whether I should trade it for a large or simply wash it and wait until it loosens up a bit. I could live with how it is now, though I might prefer it a bit bigger, if I indeed did get a size too small.

How much bigger would a large be, and how much of a difference, if any, would washing it give?

EDIT: To give another example of how it fits, if I bend over to touch my feet it feels extremely tight, where as it feels like it's nearly about to rip at the shoulders.

EDIT 2: Even though it's trivial, I want to point out that I'm American so I'm more used to the relax fit. Though, if this is anything like getting a new pair of shoes then I'll get used to it.

Also, I wanted to mention that unlike the pictures on the website, there is no lining under the zipper, I guess. It goes straight to the plaid interior, which is something I like.

Did you get the BS? I've been eyeing those for $30 as well...You say the tartan starts at the zipper? I thought only the true baracuta does this, a feature that is essential with this jacket, being able to see the tartan peaking out while its zipped almost all the way up...anywhoo I have a real baracuta that fits pretty close to body but enough room to wear a buttondown and light sweater also underneath, as I believe they should, being British or American shouldn't effect a good fit lol. Oh yeah I don't pop the collar on mine but wear it slightly unzipped/ just enough to shoot the tartan.

Yeah, I wear mine like that too. Put the collar down and leave it the front about 25% unzipped.

Anyways, I have the Merc, and on mine, at least, the tartan starts just about 1/8th of an inch away from the zipper.

I wore it out today, and I'm beginning to get used to the tightness. As said, I more at custom to relaxed fit clothes so this was a small change. Overall, though, I'm very happy with it and I don't think I'm going to trade it for a large.

I'm kinda slow, but I think I get the (sartorial) picture now; this is the look Jackie Gleason sported in the "The Honeymooners," yes?

no not really more like james dean, elvis, frank sinatra, the Clash, the Jam, other mods and skins. Baracutas are odd that they are somewhat synonymous with both old golfers and punks.

you got the BS jacket? I like the fabric they use on them, it's 100% cotton (tho not teflon coated like baracuta) rather than the cotton/poly blend. And it has the open back vent (not sewn down like on Fred Perry, Merc, Lonsdale etc). Doesnt really affect the wearability, just a nice "authentic" detail.

the newer Merc and FP harringtons (except the waxed FP) dont have the tartan lining going to the edge of the zipper, which I agree aesthetically kills one of the defining aspects of a G9 jacket

I just got a BS Baracuta today I got from Overstock for $30. I'm glad I went with the Small, it's almost exactly the same size as the 36 (real) Baracuta I got. The arms are an inch or so longer though so the real one fits me better but they both fit well enough. It seems heavier than the real Baracuta and a little warmer, maybe because the fabric the real Baracuta has that nice cool, slick teflon feeling to it. One odd thing though the BS rises up when you put your arms in the air where the real Baracuta doesn't at all, no worries though unless I plan on walking around arms raised like that lol. I definitely like the real one better, it seems a tad better quality and does not wrinkle at all where the BS is wrinkled to hell and needs some ironing. Considering the BS was $30 and the Baracuta $220 I'd say the BS is a pretty damn good version. Oh yeah the vent on the back isn't a true vent like the real Baracuta but the bat wings does look cool. And the tartan is red/white on a blue background (the jacket is red) and small so it doesn't pop as much but hey...$30!

Can you give more details about the vent in the back? I don't think mine has one, not that I really care deal though.

it has these batwing lines on the back and its supposed to cover a vent or slot that opens up which lets air pass through but most just have the wings without the actual vent or **** opening up.

It's hard for me to say because I don't wear many jackets so I can't really compare it. However, I would say that they aren't excessively large or very small. From the should it's wide and then it get's skinnier how it goes.

Give me some examples and I might be able to help you more.

Which make is slim yet relatively long in the body, with small-ish armholes? And what's the best colour? Navy blue looks a bit dowdy to me. British tan (the classic), black, burgundy or green look like good options. Edit; re the Warrior jacket. I am 5-10 go for Medium for a fit which is not too close?

I have a sage/tan one (Lands End), a blood red one (Baracuta), a chocolate brown one (Izod), two navy ones (Ben Sherman and ?? vintage), a dark green one (Nordstrom), and a black/glen-plaid reversible one (Obey). I wear them all. If I find another one that fits in a different color for cheap, I'll probably get it. I seem to be making a collection of these.

If you just wanted one, I wouldn't get navy, since you'll probably wear it with dark jeans, and that looks weird to me. Black is okay, but a good sage, tan or brown color is probably the most versatile, as long as it doesn't fit like a grandpa jacket.

I don't know, J... a navy Harrington with dark denim, with a contrasting shirt, seems like a great casual look imo.
