Got the Herpes notebook today. It's in new shape and is 43 years old! and came with a neat little silver mechanical pencil... And it's almost certainly "lizzard", as our dear departed lascar would have spelt, but with interestingly large scales. Slight disappointment it was not allicroco or phoque, but there you go. How did you know yours was phoque, LK?

Cursory glances at bad images are not good for judgment.

They still sell that silver pencil for something like $200.

The seller--a reputable sort of place in Switzerland--described it as phoque, and it also has a rather distinctive grain and look.

Is self-promotion allowed (encouraged?) in this thread?

Still available on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=013

This case sold for $72.89!

Seems like quite a bargain if is really trimmed in tortoise shell.

Did you see this LK, and what do you think of the sale at this price?

I'd say sure, as long as you offer SF members a discount

Not a bad price, but given that this was a veneered item, it isn't as valuable as solid tortoise-shell items, molded from a solid piece of shell.

Negrila reminds me of the ever elusive LouCostellos which are truly the Holy Grail of shoes.

Your search powers are amazing, RJman. When will you find a pair of LouCostellos?
