That's the problem with buying vintage shoes. Many companies existed for decades, and the quality often changed with the times. Hard to know exactly what you're getting. Plus, some of the companies weren't that great to begin with. The golden years of U.S. made shoes were certainly better than what we have now, but not every firm was an AE or Alden. Lots of bad leather, etc. even then.

That said, I snagged the burgundy 9D. If it doesn't work out, you may spot it soon in the B&S forum, Alan.

I really like these. Did we ever figure out who made shoes for Borrelli?

So who got her to end the auction and for how much? It's only fair the buyer fess up on the thread given they were posted here.

I confess to having done this many times with her (and even just recently for a Kiton linen tie that's on the way).

I can't believe I actually like these! Maybe it's because they look very comfortable. No way I'd buy them but if they were given as a gift I'd wear them around the house and tolerate the ridcule from my wife, kids and friends.

Some are listed as burgundy cordovan, and I found this reference to this maker using shell.....anything is possible, I suppose.

I bought a pair of the burgundy; seller confirms they are burgundy colored leather and, unfortunately, not cordovan. Still nice, I think. Thanks for the tip-off, Doc.

Ah yes, Seamen Staines, that ole salty dog! I understand he'll be coming out of Master Bates's schooner and onto Cabin Boy's porthole.
