He's probably thinking of the old, v-cleat style that used to be made in the USA. Double soled, either a blucher long wing or plaintoe. I'm guessing you could make a case for that. There's probably something to be said for the power and sturdiness of that shoe. The current versions are imitations, granted, good imitations, but imitations still.
