The bottom of the soles say shell cordovan? Looks like suede to me.

actually, i think they're custom make-ups - and they used excess combination soles for the makeup.

But wouldn't they have sold them if they were custom make-ups? My thinking was they screwed up on that custom shoe by putting shell cordovan on the sole and thus could not sell to the person who ordered them.

possibly. but they've been putting up quite a few unique special makeups with the shell cordovan sole.

I think the AE soles for the shell shoes are of nicer quality, and are probably being requested on special orders. I wouldn't doubt that they order them pre-stamped with 'shell cordovan'....

Those look like Connaughts to me, which would make them a good, but not great, deal.

I agree, they do appear to be better...but in my experience they are made from a softer leather and wear down faster.

So then in what sense are they better? The Cordo soles are rendenbachs, no?

Does anyone know if Santoni LE's run true to size, or do you need to go down a half size like FAM's?

I believe you are correct, but my AE shell soles seem to be wearing much, much slower.

So I've heard... but I simply said they appear to be better. They may even use a better quality leather (that may just tend to wear out faster). I think there are a lot of components which make up a good sole other than longetivity (i.e. support, comfort, etc.).
