Cool Shoes, Paraphernalia & Desiderata - Page 152

I like that style much better than the current AE Concords.

This particular pair does not look well-cared for, to put it mildly.

I expect desirable styles in common sizes will top the recent $340 BIN fairly easily. Even the slippers seem to be settling in at more than $150. My guess for a popular shoe: $380-$450.

Loafers, I imagine, will command less than laceups.

I might get my styleforum membership rescinded for this but I so don't get Dovers. It's a shoe that everyone makes, the EG's are not on a particularly different or more elegant last that what the other people are doing, I don't get it.

The consensus is that EG executes this style the best. To me, a RLPL Carter (3 eyelet version of the Dover) on the 888 or 82 would be quite elegant.

I'm sure thee EG execution is wonderful, is just that I see the Dover and I think of this (but before I get flamed, I recognize the differences and the superiority of the Dover)

Totally understand where you're coming from, Ed. I do think that choice of leather and last are crucial. I've seen the Dover in Dark Oak on the 202 at Saks and, yeah, it's a little boring compared to some other possibilities (burnt pine or edwardian on 888 springs to mind). Most people probably wouldn't appreciate at first glance the difference between the EG and AE versions - but then we're really talking about the narcissism of small differences, aren't we?

Ed, I hear you! I think that it's partly the great influence of our esteemed forum-mate Jcusey, who, on one occasion declared the EG Dover to be the second most sublime RTW shoe in the world (the JL Jermyn II was first). We've all benefited from John's immense shoe knowledge, and I think that the Dover has too!

Hmmm....I think that it can't be all Mr. Cusey's influence. The second volume of Men's Ex High End shoes published the results of its poll of the ten best RTW shoes of all time. I don't have mycopy in front of me right now, but Guilg of Crafts' Rusty was first. I believe that the Dover was third, just behind the Jermyn II.

The apron of these JLs reminds me very much of EG

To me, the Dover has always been a top 5 RTW shoe. Maybe even top 3. It's the best looking Norwegian on the market. Last selection is critical though, I personally like it best on the 606.

Couldn't agree more. I think it woeks equally well on 888 with a single leather sole and the 82.

My RLPLs arrived today. Very nice indeedy.

The Camdens are nice, though a touch big (being half a size larger than my usual size). I'm wondering whether to get the proper size or just put an insole in it.

The Mackays are very very nice indeed - they're on the 888 last, plus they're in tan calf whereas I seemed to think that they were in tan suede. I can't verify the original GVH shop item as being suede or calf, but I'm fine with calf
