Just started thrifting recently. My first time e-bragging.

$24 - Allen Edmonds Woodstock

I passed on them the first time I saw them and then kicked myself later that night for not picking them up. Luckily when I went back the next day they were still there.

Does anyone know how to make the frilly things lay flat and not fray upwards?










$15 - Hickey Freeman 100% Wool made in Italy.

I don't know much about HF. What does sport mean? They are my size but the legs are very wide. If I got the legs slimmed would they look weird?

first pair I ever found was at G-will for $14.99. However they were also unworn. Very cool pair of shoes and I love the color pattern of yours. Very nice !

Today was rough, I had to put down my 13 year old malamute. I'm gonna hit the thrifts tomorrow to try and cheer myself up.

Finally had a good shoe day for a grand total of $18

Normally don't thrift a bunch but after finding a Canali suit for $12 at GW and selling it on ebay for $150 I got the bug!

Ralph Lauren Polo Oxford $3.99
2 pairs Zanieri Super 100 wool slacks (fit perfect) $4.99 ea.

All of his for a grand total of $25

Uhhh ohhhhh...We got ourselves another one!

My condolences. My mom had to put my family's dog down today as well. Ours was a 16 year-old mutt from the Houston SPCA that we got when she was a puppy. They said she was a Golden Retriever/Collie mix. The DNA test we had done on her many years later revealed that she was mostly Boxer, with some Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Parson Russell Terrier mixed in.

That's a interesting mix. I would love me an Italian Greyhound!

What a drag, and condolences--that was one mighty fine hound, and I'm glad I had the privilege of making her acquaintance when we hit the stores last summer. Do me a favor and pass on whatever tips there might be for dealing with that kind of loss. Our eldest of three dogs is nearing the end (it's the hip thing common to aging shepherd breeds) and much as we think we are prepared, we are not. When things looked bad a few weeks ago, we ended up putting her on some kind of performance-enhancing injections into the hindquarters. It's worked well, as $600 worth of drugs usually do, but it's only buying time. Can't bear to think about it.

No two ways around it, it ******* sucks, I haven't been able to sleep, hence why I'm on SF at 2:00am. Thanks all for the kind words fellas. On another note, nice article Pnutpug, although I think my spot just got blown up.......just kidding. It's not like you cant just Google where the thrift stores are in any given city. And Jesus Spoo, 500K a year? Also @Randy, that **** made me laugh out loud, I needed it, thanks.

Develop a feel for labels, brands, materials and current styles. this is a helluva lot harder than it looks unless you work in the fashion industry, or are actually willing and able to put in the research.
Spend 10+ hours a week visiting filthy, reeking shops, populated by flashers in tights, 80 year old women with an odd fascination for ironing, and aggressive resellers. Some days, you are lucky - but usually you find things like a refrigerator magnet in the shape of a piece of sushi.
Note, unless you live in a mindlessly consumeristic city, you may be driving as many as 400 miles a week to make your rounds.
Then, take what you have found and launder it to remove signs of urine, sweat, and other biological hazards.
Now, you finally have an inventory, time to spend 40-50 hours photographing and listing items, as well as communicating with your potential customer base.
You pay a significant commission to your selling forum, and then you spend time packing, shipping ect. Hopefully you have protected yourself from consumer fraud. Hopefully.
Are you ready to start following that business model?
It sounds lovely in Spoo's article (congratulations Spoo!) but reality is - I can only think of a half-dozen cities where it's a viable full-time business. Even in those cities, you need a highly educated sense of taste.

Spoo is officially a middle man now. This article is good for him, because his business model depends on increased number of small producers who have limited access, means, time, reputation to access the market efficiently. All he has to do is to convince them he can produce gold, and he certainly does at times, especially for certain brands. He is the only winner. Mainy's business on the other hand may suffer with addition of even one or two flippers in Kansas City area which is a smaller market, relatively speaking. Even if they are not pros, if they buy one or two good stuff he loses money. Some of the better flippers here are relatively new but learned very quick. See DM7s first posts, and I have been here long enough to give you couple more examples. I do not mean to offend anyone. I was just surprised.
