Wow, there seems to be a few journalists here (I'm a student myself). Although given the job market and average salaries, I guess it shouldn't be that surprising.

hold on for a bumpy ride boys, but i think it will get better. (couldn't get much worse).

Then this T&A tie. Anyone know what this weave is called?

You should send it to me for further examination

There's been a few times when I've been out and seen the same folks around on multiple occasions. Pretty sure some of them are active on the board but never talked to them. I suggest doing something like a two finger nose pick while staring right at the guy if you think it's an SFer.

...would that be two fingers from the same hand, or one finger from each hand? Or, one of your own fingers and one from someone else (or two fingers from someone else)?

I only notice other shoppers when I see the same people at subsequent stores along one of my routes, or flipping hangars faster than someone who is shopping "normally". Otherwise, I get in the zone and ignore everyone else.

Didn't someone suggest the sly toe tap a la that politician?? Sounds effective to me.

Yup - would definitely be nice to have a secret word/code/etc. Besides you, I think I've met/know all the active (non-lurker) MN thrifters on this board.

SF member Beck would actually do this. If he does, I'll know where he got the idea. :lookaround:

I took the day off tomorrow and decided to head to Vienna for an all day thrifting tour. I'm taking off at 6:30am...it's been awhile since I've spent a day doing it! Here's to finding a pile of Kiton and Brioni with my name written all over it!

Hey guys, been casually following this thread for something like a year now but rarely find anything exciting enough to post up here. I'm curious to hear what you'd do presented with this -

It's a Brioni orphan, but the fabric is a mess. Those are a few of the holes, but there were 2 more I found in a casual glance. I left it on the rack; would you guys have grabbed it anyhow?

Went home with a Corneliani Linea Sartoria so I didn't feel too bad.

assume $25-50 to repair each hole. would you have picked up that particular coat (in non-damaged condition) at that particular thrift store if it had been tagged $100-200, or would you have left it on the rack?

I'd have left it, depending on the price and assuming you wanted to flip. Re-weaving, as others mentioned in the thread, is expensive and a big turn-off to buyers. That many holes would take some work, not to mention it was an obvious orphan. Good call, feel good about what you brought home.

Regarding thrifted "art", these are probably my two favorites - obtained at an indie thrift shop in small town Georgia. I found them 3 weeks apart - the first one was on sale for $6, the 2nd I picked up a few weeks after the first for the full price of $12. I asked the owner if they had any more, and she said she did, in storage, and just needed to dig them out but would hold them for me and call when they were available - that was a couple months ago and I'm patiently waiting.

Anyhoos, these are both hand-painted on canvas - I think oils because it's laid on pretty thick in some spots but could be acrylics. Appears to be the same artist, but signature is illegible.

I call this one "Wardrobe Malfunction".

I haven't come up with a name for this one yet...

I also pick up every single velvet painting I see if it's under $10. Same for FeatherCraft art (a/k/a bird feather art, typically Hecho en Mexico), as well as any questionable or poorly-executed hand-painted / drawn etc piece of art. My intent was to have my own Gallery of Questionable Art but it wouldn't really go well in any of the rooms in my new house.
