Hey guys looking for some advice. I like to thrift, but Ill admit I know jack about suits, blazers, etc. Im much more into streetwear. However, I have recently in the market for a nice blazer to go w/ jeans, sneakers, whatever. I found a navy blue window pane patter blazer under maker "racquet club". Is this brand worth a damn? (I live in Iowa, so many of these makers I see on here will never be found, best I can hope for is Brooks Bros..) It fits me decently well, but would need slight tailoring, is it worth it?
Thanks

post up your measurements, i'm sure someone on here has one they can hoop you up with on the cheap.

I am a big Floyd fan. Best 3 Floyd LP's for me = Animals, Atom Heart Mother and Saucerful of Secrets. Prefer early Floyd pre Dark Side of Moon era to their latter period, Animals (1977) being the exception to this.

U2 suck ass, only liked Joshua Tree.

Bruce Springsteen has two really good songs - the ghost of Tom Joad, and that other which is about going down to the river (never remember the name of this song). Both songs were excellent. The guy deserves some respect for these two classy tunes, and his acoustic stuff where he plays harmonica reminds me of Neil Young a bit (it was him unplugged I think and remember watching it - wish I taped it).

Thrift Fit: Out of Town Wedding Weekend / Just Caught Up On All The Posts, **** I Need To Take a Nap Edition.

Suit: Corneliani
Tie: Hickey Freeman
Shirt: (undermining both thriftiness and everything else) Calvin Klein, a gift
The flower was also a pen... wish I'd realized that before I put it in my pocket beside my white PS.

At the risk of turning this into ARTforum, I saw this. It looked legit, it was framed well (at one point before the framed started getting nicked up), and it was only $15. Anyone know anything about how to authenticate this? I'll probably take it to somebody tomorrow.

And these sweet Aldens, which are way too big for me:

Animals is fine. Some nice jams and good Gilmore stuff. Most people dismiss/dislike Final Cut. I can see why, but I stand by it; there's some decent music in there, if you can get through all the Waters selfi-indulgence and uber-political-inside-Cricket.

I'll be the first to admit my tastes are. On the same playlist mix, I have Dead Can Dance, Miles Davis, Goldfrapp, Shiny Toy Guns, Greenday, Lady Gaga, Floyd, The Doors, Moana and the Moa Hunters, Ashley MacIsaac, Robert Miles, Oakenfold, Robert Bennett, Peter Gabriel, "A Fifth of Bethoven" and yes, pre-Achtung U2 (among others, equally as eclectic). So you tell me why I can't tolerate the Boss, much of the Stones, nearly all of the Beatles' solo/post breakup stuff, or most rap that isn't House of Pain or Cyprus Hill.

Like I said, bring your hate. I can handle it.

No worries, I'm not excluding other rappers! (Still and all, most of those aren't exactly contemporary  )

Dood, REM is my hometown band... Up until the early 90's they were awesome. U2 Rattle & Hum and beyond is 100x more pretentious than anyone else I can think of... Maybe 90's Sinead O'Connor comes close.

Anything REM on IRS records is classic. I think they felt bad for leaving the Indy label and that's when they went all PC when they released Green.

Most full-of-themselves group with no real talent: U2
Engage.

I would describe the sound produced by U2 to be roughly equivalent to two ***** being rubbed together.

Y'all are now blocked from my eBay auctions and on my **** list. :plain:

Got a question for anyone who knows: is there an accurate and reliable way of telling if a tie is real ancient madder just by sight or by feel?  I've seen some pics of some ancient madder ones and I have a few I suspect that might be (they've got the darker paisley design typical of ancient madder), but I just don't know how to verify, or even how to tell the difference.  Thanks.

There certainly is.
“The ‘madder’ part of this lovely phrase refers to a natural dye from a Eurasian herbaceous plant, Rubia tinctoria, the root of which was used since ancient times as a regal dyestuff. Thus ‘ancient’ madder. Since the 19th Century the dye has primarily been used on silk, producing beautifully deep, muted and soft colorations of red, green, chocolate, medium blue, and yellow. Silk dyed in this manner is characterized by a dusty-looking finish and a feel (referred to as a chalk hand by the experts) very much like a fine suede, and a matte finish. And not just any silk. A special ‘gum’ silk, is used. The silk is first boiled to remove its natural gum (an organic resin), dyed, and then the fabric is bathed in a new gum-based solution that gives it its characteristic soft handle and heft.

“Today the process is employed mainly for neckwear printed in England in a paisley or small geometric pattern. The coloring agent in madder root – called alizarin — was in fact first chemically extracted and then synthesized in 1869 by two English chemists. Although the dyeing process, even today, requires a variety of painstaking steps, synthesized alizarin brought the price within the reach of commercial producers, and paisley-designed silks of ancient madder became popular in the second-half of Victoria’s reign for neckwear and scarves.

“Paisley madder ties have been a status symbol on college campuses since the 1930s, as a natty alternative to the traditional striped tie. Paired with a tweed sports jacket, they’re as conservatively colorful and slightly idiosyncratic today as ever.”

— G. Bruce Boyer

To summarize, ancient madder, TRUE ancient madder pieces have a very distinct hand to them - a very chalky and unmistakable feel.
