I picked up a H. Freeman glen plaid flannel for $30 yesterday. The waist and the lenth on the pants is spot on and everything on the coat is great with the exception of the sleeve length. I'll post a pic when I get it back from the tailor, but it's a great winter gap-filler. I also have a US made RL Polo grey flannel suit that I thrifted for about the same price in getting altered. Two nice winter suits for about $150 total including alterations is OK by me.

yeah wtf!

Thats less thrift more steal.

I was happy with a Marcs blazer and a few skinny ties from vinnies today... Oh, and a good chuckle at the Hugo Boss jacket that they'd marked up to $20 over the usual $9 or so, and the Oxxford Cashmere/Wool jacket that was only $8! Alas, about 4 sizes too big.

What would you estimate is your limit for how much too big you will buy a thrifted jacket? I'd say 2 sizes for me if I really like it. Above that, I lose hope that it could be altered even if it's particularly nice.

Is there really that much demand for Robert Graham?
All you gotta do is check out Robert Graham listings on ebay. At any given time there are typically 400 to 500 listings for Robert Graham items (mostly shirts). If a shirt is in new condition, and is well photographed (always helps), it will almost always fetch $40-50 (at least), more if it's got extra details or is unique in some way.

I picked up a cool camel hair jacket at goodwill a few days ago. Not any great brand (bill blass) but it is in great shape, has cool patch/flap and a patch breast pocket, and most importantly requires no* alterations! Considering that I have very short arms I was thrilled to find something stylish I can wear for $6.

I'm considering going back to get it anyway.

It fit me in the shoulders (well, within 1cm or so each side), but was just way too big around the chest and the rest of the body.

I guess my limit is knowing that the tailor will charge say $60-80 (AUD) for extensive slimming and adding that to the cost of the jacket to figure out if it's worth it.

Very heavy HSM overcoat in a dark herringbone tweed, two nearly imperceptible runs in the fabric, exactly my size: $7.68, a Salvation Army in Long Island. I've seen similar models new for $500ish. Will be perfect for the dead of winter.

The only Goodwill that I will go out of my way to not recommend is the Chelsea store on 25th between 6th and 7th (closer to 6th). It must be the rent or something, but their prices are outrageous - like $100+ for crappy Hugo Boss suits - and I've found the staff there rude and unhelpful. The prices really make it worth avoiding that store, as you're not likely to find anything that you can't find at other Goodwill locations. I've been there a handful of times, and not found anything special. After the last time, I swore I'd not return, and I won't.

lol, its funny you said that I was just there today (I just happened to be in that area) and thought the same exact thing. They had a wide selection of quality brands (zegna, hickey freeman, thomas pink) but the prices were outrageous for a thrift. The shirts on average cost $18 and many were in poor shape. I did find a canali sport coat, but it was $75 and about three sizes too big.

I thrift shop in San Diego, Sometimes in LA. The key to finding GREAT items like i do is to get to the store EARLY, check the racks thoroughly and check back on stores as much as possible, this increases the chances of you finding a valuable item. Also dont I dont limit to thrift stores, I use Craigslist very often and have found unbelievable deals. Once I nearly got an entire versace bedroom set off of craigslist for a price so low its disgusting!

The Goodwills in these parts have one boutique location called Second Debut. Apparently, all the clothing sorters at each Goodwill location in the metro area are supposed to pick out the good stuff to send it here. Of course, good stuff slips through sometimes. There are locations that are better than others as well, as one I visit weekly in a wealthy neighborhood provided me with Margiela, Rag & Bone, Barbour, lots of RL and BB and the like.

I did pay a visit to this Second Debut to find it a mishmash of stuff. A lot of Tommy Bahama and Greg Norman, but they did have some nice stuff from Zegna, Canali, Brioni and the like. They also had a couple mtm shirts from Marty Mathis, who owns a clothing store in Minneapolis and was a poster on here some time ago. Prices weren't bad for what the place is - about $10 for a shirt, $20-$60 for suits, $7 for ties, etc. I got a nice Talbott Seven-Fold for $7 that day.

This other place you speak of with $18 shirts sounds absolutely insane..... I wouldn't even consider that a thrift shop....
