Two interesting finds:

John Varvatos denim. 32L (available and in damn good condition)

And APC Rescue denim. 35. Might be available if I don't keep them.

Great finds everybody.

Pretty crappy day here, my cat passed away when I got home. At least I was there for the end.

While the texture of the knit tie would look great against the plaid, the thickness would not help with the size issue.  In general thick knits do not work well with a fitted vest like this one.

Or of course you could always pass it on to someone smaller.... (still obv. jealous I didn't make it in line in front of you, though I probably would've had the opposite problem with it).  I think the girth is not so much a fit problem as is the length of the vest, which seems a tad short for those trousers on you.  Probably not a problem to leave jacket unbuttoned, though.

So something like this?

So, guys, some of you may have read my blog and remember the How to Thrift series I did a few months ago. The one missing piece in that series I always meant to do is on shoes. I thought about it several times, but always got a bit stumped. I mean, I can list brands to look for, but part of the value in what I did with suits was helping folks learn to look past the label and recognize quality. But I feel like quality in shoes is kind of hard to define and hard to give easy things to look for. Quality leather is just something you sort of learn to recognize with time, and quality construction is difficult too - glued crap can be made to look like a Goodyear welt, at least well enough to fool noobs.

So, help me out: aside from brands/makers, how would you tell a beginning thrifter how to look for quality shoes?

frown.gif As a cat lover, you have my deepest condolences. I think the thrift gods will grant you a pick-me-up find soon enough!

It's small, yes, due to my gut, which is an ongoing project. It's obvious that it's too small when I button the jacket.

But unbuttoned, is it "too small" (passable) or "TOO small" (lose some damn weight)? Since it's going to be cold here tomorrow, I was thinking it might make the perfect V-Day ensemble, paired with a Drakes black grenadine and brown AE Sanfords. But perhaps not.

Although it's hard to see the pants to determine the fit but the jacket looks fine with me. But I'm into slim fit...I really dig the 3 piece tweed suit! I wish I had one. That's so baller!

Better, but don't forget to unbutton the bottom vest button.

Came away with a good amount of stuff today. Nothing mind blowing but some solid finds. Everything is available.

Black shoes plain.gif

Santoni (9 D) and Alden wing tips (12 EE).

RLPL corduroy shirt. Sz M. Great details like epaulets, double button cuffs and "v shape" pocket flaps.

Vintage Notre Dame/N.Dak varsity cardigan. I'd guess late 50's? Size 42

Lands End Tiroler Loden wool jacket. Suede collar. Size L.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Recent Samuelsohn flat front khaki trousers. Super 110s. 36 (+ 2 3/4") x 34 (+ 2 1/2")

Pendleton duck embroidery sweater. Made in the USA. Size L

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

LL Bean Norwegian sweater. Size L

Levis Big E denim trucker jacket. Great patina. Didn't even realize it was Big E until I got home. Red tab was hiding. Tagged 46 but fits like a 42.

Vintage BB braces. Made in England. Pattern is hard to make out, but it looks like a bull charging at one of The Wild Things (from Where the Wild Things Are).

I was thrilled to find some decent LPs at a store that never has any good records (they get them, but they rarely make it out past the vultures). Makes me think some crazy stuff was sucked up before I got there.

A few things to look for: leather lining throughout, leather insoles, tight stitching (more stitches per inch=better), closed channel stitching on the soles, look for pores in the leather of the uppers.
