The official thrift/discount store bragging thread - Page 4066

I mentioned yesterday that I'd post a few photos of the local outdoor hockey rink. Probably something you might not have seen in warmer climes. I'm not even sure if those in you in northern states have these. Every neighbourhood here has one.

Midnight after a storm

A coyote in the middle of the city. He lives in an immense river valley that runs through the city. I live a few blocks from the valley. He was out scavenging one night.

Icicles on a nearby church. A nostalgic scene but really an indication that their roofing/attic ventilation is experiencing problems and these icicles will cause more problems in time.

Sounds like you were thrifting at the Westport, CT Goodwill.

Yes, I'm aware of the difference. I'll state more specifically in the future.

Yeah, that CD was questionable since I couldn't remember all the clues to look for. I decided that if it was discovered not to be THE Dior then I would harvest the buttons. Thanks!

I'm hoping I can have the waist taken in enough to fit me, without having the vents popping wide open.

Other items were a Brioni dual vent suit, couple of oxxfords, PINK shirts, zegna shirts, etc. I believe both the oxxfords are orphans. One was a navy blue pinstripe that was paired with a pair of oxxford pinstripe pants that were from another suit ffffuuuu.gif

White label, clean stitching.

Embroidered initials?

Real black MOP buttons throughout

The Dior you are looking for is essentially a silver/white tag that just says "Dior", if I recall correctly. But, giving the fact this shirt looks clean, has mops, and if it fits well, hell, I would of pick it up for a good price.

This is so very true. In the past I have actually found a couple that I would wear if they had fit, but they bombed on ebay, selling for about $15 each. One was solid orange and the other blue on blue stripe. I had a real ugly one that when I got home found damage. I figured I'd throw it up for sale because the RG guys are nuts anyways and it sold for $35. It makes no sense at all, but they bring in the money.

Trying to condense my post into one; today Nat and I found some pretty cool Horsman vintage dolls, not really have seen much of the "Tax Season 2013" quite yet but I don't give up. Passed on a really cool fur lined polo sportsman late 90's fashion jacket it was a silver color and was really loud. I couldn't justify the price however.

This is kind of bringing back old postings but I still have three of those sweet William Huang shirts size Small left. Funny what you find in storage.. Hoping everyone is having a great week thus far and if anyone just wants to chat that's cool :)

I'm just trying to help monitor the items here so I don't have to look through 50 old raggedy, stained shirts to see 1 or 2 true items of beauty.

besides, if I want the opinion of people who thrift, no point in starting a new thread when I can go to the source.

my posts have been sincere and genuine, but if you want to get an attitude... you don't see me complaining that all your "available" posts should really go in the classified section, do you?

this is a bragging thread, NOT a marketplace.

Yea, OK...sure, come and "monitor" this thread with your 11 posts LMFAO ffffuuuu.gif. Why dont you go ask for a special "Thrift Thread Monitor" title while you're at it.  Just ask the mods over here in this post for it http://www.styleforum.net/t/164395/transparent-moderation-log-site-topics-part-ii

AND I wont offer any of my stuff that I THRIFTED at cost + shipping to people here anymore. No problem.

I'll reiterate my point. Questions and conversations are great and go on all the time here, but to specifically try and start a full on back and forth conversation about the merits of thrifting is IMO the WRONG thread.

Oh yeah, Troika is a good guy. I know him in real life. A Stand up guy!

It's ok, I figured you were either on a hiatus or my pm got lost in your mail box.

Anyhow, has any of you gents ever gotten a thrifted shirt or two tailored? I just got one tailored. It was a John Varvatos staple grey/white stripes. The tailoring fees were more than what I paid for the shirt. lol You guys think it's worth it? If so, at what level?

Honestly, I would advise to be VERY particular when it comes to tailoring thrifted clothing - meaning reserve the tailoring to pieces that you ABSOLUTELY must have and know you would wear on a fairly consistent basis. From the time I first started thrifting, I have probably tailored 10-15 shirts (waist) and 5-10 suits/SC's (waist again) that I wore maybe once and have since sold as they just collected dust in my closet. Lesson learned. I am now much more picky re: what I bring to my tailor.

Bottom line: I have found that 9 times out of 10 if a thrifted item requires tailoring - don't.

Dudes, chill. I think the man meant "lurk," not monitor. Swap that in and his statement is totally reaonable. HE's trying to figure out if thrifting is worth his time, and whether bragging is whorth the abuse he's getting for being a noob.

If you just mean taking in the sides and slimming the arms, I do it myself. Put it on inside out, pin it, whip it through the sewing machine twice on each seam (for strength, one a few mm outside the first), trim off the excess. Voila.. Works on polos too (so those of you passing on classic fit while seeking custom/fitted take note).
