That....is awesome....looks really nice too!!

Thanks. "It is so choice." ~Ferris Bueller

+1. My parents bought an '86 powder blue / dark blue interior SL years ago and have been shoveling money into it ever since. I used to use it during the summers in college and infuriate them by calling it "my car" :D Maybe someday I'll buy it off them so I can pour oodles of money into it. But not yet.
Oh, and :worship:. Both because that color is AWESOME and because YOURS WAS FREE!....

It really IS a pretty hot color. Turns a lot of heads ifyaknowwhatimean.

When I was a senior in college I bought an 8 year old 1974 240D from a TWA pilot in Kansas City. As you mathematically-inclined types have deduced, I am an older guy. It had 75,000 miles on it. I sold it 3 years later with 125,000 miles on it. Maintenance was oil & filter, a battery, and a new exhaust system. I bought that car for $6200 and sold it for $6400.
I drove that car when I was a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. One of my buddies asked "Smitty, how can you afford a Mercedes?" I just laughed. He had leathered up RX-7 which he bought new for about $16,000.
Mercedes used to make solid, simple, and even somewhat spartan vehicles which would run forever. The diesel engines they made in the 70's and 80's were as good as anything ever on the road. Now, they make overly complex overpriced luxury vehicles. IMO they have lost their way.

Perhaps and I agree with you about the bullet proof diesels although I have never owned one. I know lots of guys who do, however and that's good enough for me.

Awesome! But you are right, a free used luxury car is never free. I know from experience (but never was lucky enough to get one free - I paid up for them!). SteveSmith is right, Pre 1983-ish BMWs and Mercedes were very simple to maintain and work on. Now they are computerized monstrosities. If you have an electrical problem in, say a 1989 BMW 7-series, expect to pay $500+ just to figure out what's causing it.

Thanks. I love it and it is old enough to be fairly simple to work on. When the spirit moves me.

dig, thanks for this info....im looking at a cream 1976 400SL right now as a weekend toy. Great cosmetic shape, but im leery on repairs. being a cheap bastard, i think i need to pass hahaha.

I'm guessing that what you're considering is actually a 450SL. The big issue with that year is the catalytic converter location under the hood. The heat it puts out tends to bake the car's wiring to crispy critters. Find a late model 560 under $10K (and maybe even around $5K if you're lucky) and enjoy what is arguably the best of the breed. Just be ready to fillerup with premium!

Gotta get my wife a job as a medical secretary.

Doctors do seem to have a lot of disposable income and are quite willing to dispose of it.

Perhaps I confused you with someone else. I dont remember seeing that pic you are talking of

DigMeNow, maybe? He found a cardigan at Macy's not long ago (I think - I'm not a stalker) and posted the pic on (I believe) this board (or, the 'Jeans with a Tie?' board).
*wonders now if Dig is a furry, hence the confusion*

Thanks for all the comments, guys. You kept me busy for over an hour!

After those incredible posts (sport coats, Mainy's haul, and the Brioni tux ) I feel inadequate as well, but I started this post an hour or so ago (got distracted w/ kids etc.), so I'll throw it up: Wanted to post some of last weekend's finds earlier in the week, but its been a busy one for me(plus I'm slow with taking pics etc.) All (except the Harris Tweed, I'm still on the fence on keeping that one, although I'm in the "deep south", so the opportunity to wear a heavy tweed is is not very often- it was 78 today!- but if interested let me know) are available for trade or for right about cost + shipping (plus maybe a buck or so)if anyone is interested, otherwise may be going to the bay or to friends/relatives.

My sizes if anyone is interested in trading- 40-42R (19-20" shoulders), 16.5 x 33/34 shirts, 34-36W, 30ish L pants

PM me if you want more detailed measurements Southwick (for Mark Shale) Tweed SC, light greyish w/ brown windowpane, (appx 20" shoulders) labeled 40R
Pretty sweet Harris Tweed for Nordstrom/Broadmoor & Pike(brownish green w/ light purple stripes) , appx 19.5" shoulders, labeled 41R
Armani (I think its real, someone tell me if otherwise) Wool Shirt (again, have almost no opportunity to wear a wool shirt, plus I snagged a Pendleton blackwatch a while back) , large
The next couple are for the larger guys if interested: Oxxford clothes shirt w/ FC, 17-36 (Made by hand superfine 200 cotton; light wear, a little fading) Nice MOP buttons, one has been replaced but there is still a spare)
Pal Zileri 18.5 x 36 pale yellow shirt
Zanella 90% wool 10% cashmere model, (only 2 pleats!), thicker & softer material than the normal thin ones I have seen (have a pair my size in those), charcoal w/ light gold pin stripes. Appx. 38.5 x 32 (+ @ 1.5 w/ cuff) - no size tag
Also, picked up the following during the week which I'm keeping:
  • Zegna Tie
  • Like new brown Trafalgar leather belt
  • Appears to be recent Samuelsohn Super 110's Navy Blazer in my size-will be my new daily wear one- missing 1 front button though- anyone got any spare Samuelsohn buttons lying around?

The 4th down on that list has me all hot and bothered.

Seriously, people. Who's going back for these? My list of people in LA who owe me favors is pretty threadbare, but if we don't line someone up, I'm going to start making calls. Those SCs are the balls.

What the others said...and the reason you've never seen it is because you're left coast.
In New England we see occasional J Press stuff in the thrifts, it's very nice. I have a couple shirts and a lovely grey herringbone SC bought off a fellow thrift thread poster I met in person (in a Starbucks not many blocks from Hahvahd Yahd, actually) and I've consigned a very vintage but fantastic unlined linen coat to Nataku on eBay (sorry, Klobber, 44L or 46L before I realized it was your size). This and Andover Shop are the top ancient-but-awesome trad stuff we see here (and Mr Sid stuff)...never, ever see Oxxford but we have this!

Ive been enamored w/ J Press for a while but have never owned any. I ran into my 1st J Press at a thrift about 3 weeks ago (I'm in the New Orleans area, deep south so to speak, so wasnt really expecting to see any here) a navy blue plaid/check suit coat or sport coat- got so excited...then spotted a moth hole, then another, then 5 or 6 more...Damn!!! Of course, when looking through the pants I found the match....with even larger, almost dime-sized moth holes...one of only like 2 times I've found matching pants...

This is a really nice haul. I'm not one for french blue, but that Oxxford is probably very well constructed. And I have to say I dig the Southwick (of course it will be too long for me
shog[1].gif
).

Thanks! It is a little long, for me too...(appx 31 BOC).. I dig Southwick as well....about a month ago I thrifted a "classic brown" Southwick, older with some wear, but nice leather buttons and well put together. I wore it to work quite a few times, but its been getting fairly warm lately!

solid hauls from this guy

Thanks!! I've been hitting it pretty hard the last month or so, but there's definitely a lot of luck involved (and of course frequent thrifting excursions).

Just got back from the Goodwill in West LA on Santa Monica Blvd. Someone with a size 40 jacket and good taste must have died. Lots of Swaine Adeney Brigg jackets, + more. If you're in LA and want to run out there, I gathered them all together somewhere near the middle. Took lots of pics. Here you go:

Thanks for the info!

The store is only 2 miles from my home and the jackets are in my size! But my car is still in the body shop... I figured I needed more exercise than more amazing jackets, so I decided to walk to the store and maybe, just maybe, the jackets are still there waiting for me. Long story short, it was a happy ending. I split the haul with another gentleman from StyleForum, who was very nice and generous. I grabbed the C&C and one of the SAB jackets and he grabbed some of the other jackets. There are a few nice BB tweed jackets left in the store if anyone is still interested.

Great haul at one of my honey pots today. These pictures are generally terrible. I realized there's a spot on my lens that shows in every photo.

Ties were a dollar, scored a thick woven Holland and Sherry with fishies. Also on display is my new, terribly constructed light box. Definitely will have to make a different one with a box whose base color is white and has a less rectangular form.

Lots of things had red tags, which indicated they were a dollar. Found an XL green cotton Pringle sweater in the mix.

Stepped over to the button down shirts, snagged a 2XL Barbour Country Tattersall (my first Barbour anything) in very good condition.

Then, the heartbreaker....RLPL gingham.....

MEDIUM.....

DAMAGED.

I mean, this is a textbook case as to why people donate baller status shirts like this. I paused for a minute and bargained with the volunteer for a salvage title. She knocked it down to a super reasonable price, worth it for the buttons and to turn the fabric into some fresh summertime pocket squares. This is the first RLPL piece I've EVER seen. I don't know where these are sold locally, as I didn't see any at Neiman's last time I stopped by. I realize the reason for the hype now and will be hawking some pieces on eBay. My only question is does this particular RL label have a slim fitting cut? This shirt, despite being a medium, is a tent.

And if you've read this far, I DONE GOT SETWELL. Love these things.

Edit: Also snagged this Drakes tie from zebay for a song:

I say this once a month...Southwick is way under-rated. I have three of their suits now and they are great.

The fabric on that one is amazing, but the gorge is really low

oh yes today a Loro Piana dress shirt $7.99 a Brunello Cuccineli dress shirt $9.99 and a vintage Bulova Oceanographer (works!) for $10.00 (she was gonna charge me five, but she said because it was big she would have to charge me double the price of the other watches in the case)
