GOTTA LOVE BIDDING WARS!
My condolences. My mom had to put my family's dog down today as well. Ours was a 16 year-old mutt from the Houston SPCA that we got when she was a puppy. They said she was a Golden Retriever/Collie mix. The DNA test we had done on her many years later revealed that she was mostly Boxer, with some Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Parson Russell Terrier mixed in.
As the author of the piece in question, I profited most directly. I had some reservations at first regarding blowing up honey holes, etc., but I've come to realize that thrifting at the elite level is a LOT of work. You really have to love it to do it, and you have to have a knack. Further, the volume of stuff that comes in precludes, I think, most thrift stores from figuring out the grails and pricing accordingly. There's just too much stuff coming in and the need to get it processed and on the floor quickly gets in the way of picking and choosing with any kind of precision, especially when the stores barely pay minimturnover. We all have stories about scoring Oxxford suits for $3 that were right next to Staffords priced at $30, and we have all seen flippers leave behind gold as they push groaning shopping carts to the register. Add to that the widespread refusal to wear used clothing-- there are lots of folks who would rather wear brand-new Faded Glory than gently used Purple Label. In short, I think it is presumptuous to believe that we can have any kind of effect on how thrifts operate. There is a reason that thrifts have evolved the way that they have, and it has nothing to do with EazyE or Mainy or Spoo. We are gleaners, not Mother Earth, and our harvests have nothing to do with planting season.
On a side note, I was on the radio today and one of the hosts complimented me on my navy Dobbs fedora. Where'd you get it, he asked. Goodwill, I answered. He and the others in the studio all laughed, thinking
That was a wonderful article.

Just picked up one yesterday. How do I get one of these "bidding wars" started???
Note to self "Post the 75-80 Harris tweeds in inventory before bed tonight"....
WTF...I was happy with the 20-25% of that I was getting...until now.
