I guess that's what I was missing with the 40 R that died a slow death in no-bid land.

Just got back on after being away for a couple of days. This is hard news to read, ez. Serious condolences on your loss.

They said she was a Golden Retriever/Collie mix. The DNA test we had done on her many years later revealed that she was mostly Boxer, with some Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Parson Russell Terrier mixed in.
And to you as well, fan.

You really have to love it to do it, and you have to have a knack. Further, the volume of stuff that comes in precludes, I think, most thrift stores from figuring out the grails and pricing accordingly. There's just too much stuff coming in and the need to get it processed and on the floor quickly gets in the way of picking and choosing with any kind of precision, especially when the stores barely pay minimturnover. We all have stories about scoring Oxxford suits for $3 that were right next to Staffords priced at $30, and we have all seen flippers leave behind gold as they push groaning shopping carts to the register. Add to that the widespread refusal to wear used clothing-- there are lots of folks who would rather wear brand-new Faded Glory than gently used Purple Label. In short, I think it is presumptuous to believe that we can have any kind of effect on how thrifts operate. There is a reason that thrifts have evolved the way that they have, and it has nothing to do with EazyE or Mainy or Spoo. We are gleaners, not Mother Earth, and our harvests have nothing to do with planting season.

On a side note, I was on the radio today and one of the hosts complimented me on my navy Dobbs fedora. Where'd you get it, he asked. Goodwill, I answered. He and the others in the studio all laughed, thinking

That was a wonderful article.

I am learning a lot from everyone in this thread. I have read the entire thing over the past few weeks. This has changed the way I look at clothing in thrift stores. Thanks to all who have contributed.

Just found four custom made Turnbull and Asser dress shirts for six bucks a piece, in my size! Some times you find nothing, then bam! Can't wait to wear them. I'll post some pics once I wash them.
