That's wide open. There's the usuals to watch out for like Oxxford, Hickey Freeman, Brooks Brothers, Zegna, etc. Others talk about big Italian labels like Brioni and such but I very rarely see those. I've had good luck with Zegna. Most of the other Italian labels I've found were too fashion oriented so by the time they end up in a thrift they tend to be dated looking. I also have found that older versions of good American and Canadian brands like Corbin, Majer, Samuelson, and Southwick are great finds. The best thing you can do is learn the "pinch test" to determine if something is canvassed. I've used it to pass on a fused Hickey Freeman but then pick up a cheaper, older, but much better made fully canvassed Corbin.

Wow, I check out my local BB outlet but all it gets is the made-for-the-outlet cheap stuff. I haven't seen a piece of tailored clothing that was carried in their regular stores in years.

Even down here in Dallas I used to think everything was crap. You need to keep your eyes open because now it seems that everwhere I turn I see a thrift store. Churches also have good sales - just ask Nataku; he sleeps every night on a pile of thrifted Brionis.

You can watch eBay but it kills me to buy stuff that I know was thrifted for more than a few bucks. Plus, I've been burnt a few times buying real cheap but returning it doesn't make since because no one refunds shipping. The B&S forum seems to rarely list cheaper stuff but if you like Trad then the sellers thread over at Ask Andy has really good prices.

Perhaps there is a sixth sense in discount/thrift shopping. I seem to have cycles of amazing luck, again, I dont do it to resell, I do it to expand my wardrobe. In the past week I have found a Kiton blue blazer, a Kiton Cashmere suit, and an Isaia blazer at a total cost of $42.00.

I was wondering if Corbin was any good. The ones I have seen seem pretty decent but i've never heard anything about them. I'm definitely a fan of Southwick. I just picked up a Majer the yesterday. Didn't know anything about it other than that I liked it. Glad to hear it's decent. I saw some other brand that had a label similar to Southwick, but it was Bestwick, or Beckwith or something like that. Ring any bells? Any good?

Corbin used to be really good but it went overseas some time back - I'm not sure when. The recent stuff is pretty bad. Their style didn't change so the only way I can tell it's a good one is to see if it's canvassed.

I've only found a couple of Majer items but I absolutely love them. I worked in a men's store back in the 80's and I still remember the Majer product catalogue. At the time I didn't pay them much attention because I was all about Boss and Armani. Now, I'd love to have everything that was in that book.

I've never heard of Bestwick. Then again, because there used to be many more stores there's a bunch of older private-label stuff floating around. Maybe that's what it is? I've also found some great stuff from another classic label but I can't remember what it is exactly. I think it's Lindt Brothers or something like that.

The only problem you'll encounter is if you live down South: the older stuff is often way too heavy for a hot climate. That's why I find so much pristine vintage stuff: it was only worn 3 times a year!

Hello fellow thrifters,

Today I stumbled upon a wonderful Kiton suit. Unfortunately, it is way too large for me. I decided to get it anyway and try and give it away here to someone who could get some use out of it. It only cost me $3, so I will sell it for SOLD shipped in the US.

Color-wise, it's a greenish gray that looked olive in the thrift shop but almost completely gray when I got home. Here are some pics:

As you can see from the tag, it's a large suit. I don't want to take up too much space, but it appears to be a 50 short(sleeves are short, suit itself is 32') from my quick measurements, with 40 waist pants. If you're interested, please PM me and I can give you more measurements/details/pics. I'm also going to make a more detailed post on the trading thread.

Hope I can find a good home for this!

Good job. Hats off and all. But what I really want to know is this: If there's a sixth sense, Is there also, say, a sabotage or a thief? These are things I would like to know.

Only one fun thing lately: a narrow square end tie from the early 60s, made of gauzy printed cotton that features fisticuff-fancying-fellows:

Funky tie!

Wow, cool tie Mack! I had mixed luck today. One thrift had three nice jackets all put away right next to eachother amongst a sea of 70's polyester suits and jackets that smelled of musty basements. One is a beautiful Chester Barrie for Austin Reed silk/cashmere jacket. Styling looks very recent. Next is a Dunhill pure cashmere sportcoat. It even has surgeons cuffs. Next is a recent Gieves and Hawkes suit jacket. Made in Italy. I had to leave this behind as one cuff button was cracked and it was missing the pants (it was obviously a orphaned jacket). Pity, as I never run across Gieves and Hawkes stuff, and this was pretty recent to boot. Oh well. Regular price was $5.99/ea but I guess their Labor Day Weekend sale started today so I got each jacket for $3. Both don't fit, unfortunately so they will be for sale in the B/S thread. Pity, as I really like the Chester Barrie.

A bit dizzy.

About two hours ago, my brother snagged SEVEN fairly recent Brioni sportcoats, all double-breasted, with enamel or metal signature buttons, and one with MOP. $7.99 each at Goodwill. They vary from 100% wool, to wool and silk blends, one is 100% silk. Blue, black, bronze, pale grey. All size 40 regular, appear to be in like new shape...we'll have to look them over more carefully. Pictures to come.

A pair of AE Chester wingtips. Great condition, like someone tried them on, walked to work, decided they were too small, took them off when he got home, and gave them to the Goodwill. Usually when I see AEs they're trashed.

They're a size 10D. Not my size, I'm 12D. Anyone interested in a trade? I'm gonna post them on the B&S if anyone wants them. Fifty bucks if you read about them here, sixty there .

Depends, slim 44R or a 42R depending on the maker and my level of fitness.
