Ahhh, my size and everything, you temptress. Well, technically they would appeal to the Japanese market if they were tiny, but I feel like they appreciate Americana more than most markets.

My wife does, indeed, now have a "Horsey" jacket.

Sorry Brian, the smallest is the Polo DB POW and its a 40R. I'll let you know if it measures smaller.

There are varying sizes. I've added the tagged sizes below, but I haven't gotten around to measuring yet.

I went through this thread earlier this year and saw them mentioned and have passed on the same 2 twice now. Both were made in Canada and didn't seem that special. Should I be grabbing them?

I need to get to know what albums are wanted...I feel so insecure picking them up when I see them. I also want to get my own setup, I just know nothing about record players. I don't know why (nor does my wife) but I just like the "soft" (right word?) sound that comes with them.

I'm into any obscure late 60's-early 70's psychedelic/progressive stuff. The weird stuff that wasn't played on mainstream radio (mostly played on local college radio stations) and albums that weren't sold at your local Woolworths (you had to either go to a head shop or a dedicated record store with a large selection). The weirder/more off-the-wall, the better.

Ahh, thanks, great tip. Like everything else, I'm going to have to do some research before I feel confident making good selections. Any recommendations for a starter turn table? Also, is it easy/possible to hook it up to my receiver?

Donnie Iris (or Dominic Ierace as he was known then) was the lead singer. He later had a big solo hit with Ah Leah. He can still draw a huge crowd in the corner of the world.
If you need a copy of "We Went to Different Schools Together", I'll keep an eye out. They aren't that rare around here.

I dropped into my local GW this afternoon.  It was a good idea that I did.

 

Boss linen blazer (ticket pocket, side vents, seems well made) - fits me, though I'm not sure I like pinstripes on an odd jacket.  Probably going to the 'bay.

2 x recent HF trousers (double pleated, cuffed, fit me - one NWT)

 

 

Saw this and was all , until I saw one stain after another .

 

The most interesting part was this shirt.

 

 

It's nothing really special, but I thrifted the EXACT same one a couple of weeks ago.  Then I remembered that I had donated a pile of clothes to this particular GW last time I visited.  "OH NO!", I thought.  I must have donated it by accident!  Even worse, that item was on eBay at that very moment!  I took out my phone and ended the item immediately.  It probably wasn't worth re-purchasing just to sell it.  Oh well.  Lesson learned.

 

UNTIL . . . I just got home and checked my pile of eBay stuff.  And, OF COURSE, that very shirt was still in my house!

You can check popsike.com for completed ebay auctions to get an idea on the value of records. Another tip if you find something by a group or artist and you cant find any label info on the jacket it might be a private press record. These are records that were pressed in small quantities where the artist put the money up to have the record pressed. Also if it has a label info and its some small town or the catalog number is something like 001 they kinda fall into this category also. They are not common of course but I have found my share of them. That being said Im more of a folky singer songwriter guy. Someday I just know Im going to walking into a thrift and find Nick Drakes discography waiting for me. yeahhh righhht.

Since we just talked about it, where was the Boss made? I've found the Italian/Swiss stuff to be the best.


Maybe it was on sale a couple of years ago and they wore out/were donated at the same time? Or, came from the same guy who loved the shirt so much he bought a couple. I'm just trying to throw out some plausible theories. I find things in groups as well...I'll find Zegna in varying sizes for a month and then it's on to something else. Maybe I'm just trained to find certain things a la Pavlov's dogs?

For a great starter TT on the new or pre-owned route, you can't go wrong with a Project Debut Carbon or a Music Hall mmf 2.2. If you're looking to go the thrift route or even eBaying for a good TT under $150, I'd recommend a Technics SL-1200 or SL-1700. Otherwise any 70's TT would do nicely. Sansui, Sony, Technics, Pioneer, Sanyo, etc all made very nice stuff in the 70's.

I'm researching these right now! I don't need to necessarily thrift, but I come across them often. Normally they're older German brands and occasionally a Russian one thrown into the mix. I've seen a couple by defunct Austrian companies, but I don't find too many from Asia believe it or not. Unfortunately, I can't bring one home when we visit the US because it's a pain in the ass to have a transformer hooked up to it. I have a yamaha receiver I've been happy with that is hooked up to a simple, stock, not so glamorous 5.1 speaker system. I want to connect a turntable to it from a distance and play some of the jazz that I like.

I actually enjoy projects like this: research, purchase and hooking up. Am I the only one??

This is a piece of furniture that I wanted to ask the late Frenchy about and where I'm going to set the TT up...
