Not having the luck from the thrift gods you guys are. I Thought I found a Brooks Brothers sport coat today, my size, fit good, then went to pay for it and see a hole I missed when i looked it over.

My wife on the other hand has found a bunch of sweaters from Talbotts that sell in the $100-200 range that are still on the website with the tags still on them for under $5 each.

I went off my beaten path Saturday and hit some thrifts that I try to go to every 4-6 months. Ten stops, 180 miles.

Five pairs of Bill's chinos, 1 pair of Bill's shorts.
A pair of vintage, suicide heel Gucci bit loafers in a smallish size.
A Norman Hilton tweed SC in my size.
A vintage Izod Lacoste blue blazer with alligators on the buttons, about a 40R.
An almost new pair of Bass Weejun penny loafers in my son's rather hard to find size, 15EEE.
Four Reis of New Haven ties.
Three pairs of identically sized Polo RL chinos for flipping.
A vintage Dunn & Co. Harris tweed SC which looks new, about a 40R.
Two Brooks Brothers foulard ties.
A pair of NWT Polo RL light blue cotton pants, 36x30.

I left a couple of "not quite" items, a made in the US Lands End Hyde Park Oxford Cloth shirt with a stain. I have a couple of these shirts in my closet and they are every bit a match for the Brooks Brothers counterpart. I also left a pair of shell cordovan PTB's which looked decent but needed a resole. I would have picked up those shoes to sell cheap either here or at AAAC but these were about a 12A or even narrower. Ultra narrow is the kiss of death in my experience.

You found the hole before you hit the cash register, so you are having luck from the thrift gods.

Was gonna go hit some thrifts on Saturday, as I knew nobody would be out because of the snowstorm. Opened the garage door and changed my mind. May not look bad in the pic but there was a solid 15" in the driveway. This was around 2pm, we got an additional 5" by 7pm, so I wasn't about to leave only to come back and not be able to get in the driveway! Headed out today instead. Wish me luck!

Does anyone have recommendations for thrift stores in Los Angeles?

I'm new to this and looked at goodwill and some other place in Santa Monica . . . was unsuccessful and had a funky stench that lingered with me throughout the day. Haha.

Don't worry about where to go, just go often and cross your fingers. There is no such thing as a store that always has good stuff, and for all you know that Goodwill could have been full of unbelievable finds that morning, but someone else grabbed them first.

I see. But wouldn't there be a store or stores that typically have "better" items vs another (goodwill)?

I keep reading about people finding items NTW or people saying certain thrift stores get items that can't be sold from department stores and etc. If that's the case, I'd like to go to these places.

Well, if that's the case, I highly recommend moving near to either Frenchy or 83glt, and try to hit their stores right before they do.

The point is that some cities have better finds, and some stores have lucky days, but no recommendations on locations are going to help you. Just check the yellow pages and go often.

Seriously, if there was a store near you that stocked awesome NWT Isaia clothes... do you think someone would tell you? I don't mean to be insulting, but that is ridiculous.

Yeah, you're right. I'm sure no one would let other people know about finding great bargains on a consistent basis.

Guess I'm going to start checking them out for myself. Thanks again

Got home last night, decided to hit up one of my favorite spots. And saw they doubled their prices and actually know the good stuff now. Canali blazer was 40. Zegna was 50. Even Turnbull shirts for 20. I hate this town.

That sucks and all, but if any of those items is worth buying at $15 for a sportcoat or $8 for a shirt, they're worth buying at $40 for a sportcoat or $20 for a shirt.
