I went to a thrift store I'd almost written off the other day and found that to my pleasant surprise, it was relatively well-stocked. Theyd' been going through some remodeling and I hope that they'd simply cut inventory for that.

I picked up a pair of Barrie Ltd. boots - desert boot in cut, but rich full grain leather rather than suede- as well as a Paul Stuart cummerbund and a nice old fur felt, relatively modest brimmed fedora.

I did indeed thrift my tux. ... I also told them that it took me about a year to find the right tux. There were many polyester "Knights Formal" tuxes I've ran across that were dated and thus donated from the shops.

Outstanding! I am continually surprised by how many weddings I attend where the groom is normally a decently dressed man yet apparently had an aneurysm while choosing his formal wear.

Just recently I've decided I need to keep my eyes open for a tux. Of course, nothing decent has turned up so far and I'm haunted by all of the tuxes I passed right by in the last year and a half of thrifting.

Popped into a thrift last night while my wife was at the drug store next door and snagged a Hickey-Freeman tie for $1.99 and an XMI "handsewn for Norstroms" tie for $2.99.

This can be put at the feet of the bride. They have the belief that men's semiformal is as fluid as women's. Men rarely know enough to resist.

My wife bought me a brand new reversible Banana Republic belt at a thift store for $2 a few weeks ago. I know it's not the most luxurious brand, but still a steal imho.

True, indeed. Most of the violations of good taste I see involve ties/cumberbunds/vests matching the bridesmaid's dresses.

When I was a suit salesman there was nothing I dreaded more than an older man who brought his wife (more often than not referred to by him as "momma") shopping because she was the "expert". The result was usually a coat that was 1-2 sizes too big, pants 1-2 sizes too small and only made possible by his wearing them under his belly, pant's hem dragging the ground, sleeves down to mid-palm, and a wonderful pallet of blue suit, blue shirt, and blue tie. If she was a maverick then the tie selected would be some Rush Limbaugh/Jerry Garcia/Tobasco nightmare that would make Jackson Pollock go color-blind.

Brother, I believe I speak for many when I say having your wife actually purchase something (anything!) for you at a thrift - meaning she both likes to thrift and by extension doesn't mind you doing it - is a major victory.

picked up some diesel zaf jeans in my size, and a pair of new, unworn Allen Edmonds Sheltons, all black(not black and brown like on their website), size 10.5c. They are big for me and are going on ebay soon, they were $25 so I'll sell them for $125. Does that price sound right 2 u guys?

Seems a bit high to me. Unless they are shell cordovan, I dont know that you would get that much for them. You should try and sell here and avoid ebay fees.

First of all, I'd like to thank all of you here for this thread. I've been reading it for a few months now and it has taught me plenty and improved my wardrobe immensely while making my general existence cheaper. I bow before you all humbly.

I wanted to post a long while ago, but today's trip to the thrift has been almost perplexing in its outcome and thus I simply had to say thanks and ask a question or two - or at least think aloud. I misjudged the weather and dressed too lightly in the morning, so I stopped at a SA on my way to the library and walked with a Loro Piana cashmere zip-up ($4.99). It's in amazing condition (though without tags, obviously).

I'm a bankrupt student who thanks to this forum stopped buying his clothes at Old Navy/H&M while cutting expenses. And now I have this thing. I'd love to keep it, it is by far the nicest clothing item I've ever had in my possession (and its softer than... anything, really), but I obviously have to sell it. I don't even know how to do that as I've never owned anything that expensive - I don't sell this on craigslist, do I? So, in essence, I could use some advice as to how I should go about selling it. I understand the answer is probably "eBay", but I sense this is not one of those items that people randomly search for that sell like hot cakes. Furthermore, I don't even have an eBay account. Hence: help!

I apologize if this is a bit long-winded, stupid or against etiquette. Thank you all again for posting here, it is a service.

I can't remember who said they liked Kuhlman the other week
but I posted a really cool one on Ebay yesterday. Green and pink plaid,
very cool. Size is XL/XXL, label is 50. Some other cool stuff too.
Etro, Brioni, H-F suit, etc.

$60 to $75 is way more reasonable.

I definitely understand where you're coming from. Sometimes money to pay off loans is more of a priority than having a $900 cashmere zip-up sweater. Anyway, definitely don't do Craigslist unless you're in a wealthy city (Chicago, NYC, San Fransisco, etc). It'll just sit because nobody will be looking for something like that. My advice: Sell it on here on the B/S section. I'm sure it'll get snatched up quick. Just post it with a reasonable price. Just because it retailed new at $900 and it's in NWOT condition doesn't mean you'll be able to fetch $500 for it. I'd say put it up for $90-$125 and it'll go pretty quick. Good luck!

Absolutely, but why is she only buying thrift for me is another question?

The Thrift Gods were generous today....inspired by my swell leather luggage find from yesterday I decided to visit the sister store today.

Purchases:
Hermes Tie (My first!)
Duck theme vintage Robert Talbott handmade
Drakes blue tie with geometric motif, "new"

Norman Hilton suit jacket, 38Rish, I went on a little search to find the pants which were hiding in the adjacent Women's rack, thereupon I found a same size Southwick flannel suit, both half off!

Finished with a same size oooooold vintage Hickey Freeman (looks like the new RLPL
laugh.gif
) mint, totally hand made 3 roll 2. Cam with a modern mint Oxxford hanger to boot!

A very nice painting was also acquired for a whopping $12.

Left Behind:
Oxxford Suit with neckwear (yellowing), Ascot Chang jacket, Aquascutum Blazer, hella vintage three peice tux (moth hole).

Multiple nice vintage silk print ties, mostly vintage handmade Talbotts, blackwatch wool/cotton vintage button down shirt from England.

Oh and I should mention the Oxxford, Norman Hilton, and Southwick all came from a store called "Cuffs", anyone ever heard of it?

It's not really worth the time, stuff on there takes a little while to move.
i say keep it, i mean lets face it are you going to find a better item for $5?

just line your closet with thrifted items. You did great cutting costs by avoiding h&M and old navy. You still need clothes so get them at the SA!
