Not trying to make enemies here, but can we all show a little restraint and keep the posts to relevant and valuable thrifting finds? My suggestion is that if you're not sure on what you've found, err on the side of caution and keep it to yourself or seek assistance from one of the more knowledgeable thrifters (i.e., not me necessarily).

Sorry guys, just trying to keep it real here ...

The anti-semitism was shocking, I'll give you that. That has absolutely no place here - or anywhere.

On the other points:
I may be the main one bitching about corrupt managers. I apologize for blathering one but I'm glad I have a place to vent where other people understand and also have stories of their own. I really enjoyed some of the stories, especially the guy who finally got his hands on that sacred pile of records. I think we all agree that flippers are hurting our hobby and I love to hear stories about when someone scores one for "our side".

I believe I started both tangents this week and I apologize that I apparently completely derailed the forum.

As for the newbies, what are we going to do: put together a master list of what we deem as acceptable finds? Frankly, I need one because sometimes I inadverdantly bring home a turd or two. If not that, are we going to have someone designated who reviews all posts beforehand and approves them of being worthy of the 15 seconds it takes to read them? I nominate Nataku or AntiRabbit because the 9 months out of the year when they get no sunlight gives them plenty of free time. Think about it: sometimes one of the guys finds something - like a gold hippo - that have no place in a forum such as this but yet it had me laughing out loud and made my day.

Come on, lighten up. Sometimes I'm so bored at work that I'm just happy to have somebody post something. The last thing we need is for this to turn into the WAYWRN thread where a handful of senior members have turned it into "my wardrobe - and life in general - is so much better than your off the rack, uncultured, redneck living Hell so you must worship me" shrine and where newbies are eaten alive for fun.

Bring on the polyester Pierre Cardin ties and Stafford suits! How else are they going to learn?

I'm not being a jackass - you still find awesome sh*t
worship.gif
and therefore have my undying respect. Also, I'm running on 4 hours of sleep and I have 4 Fat Tires in me so I should be completely ignored.

Why thank you! Belgian ales bring out the poet in me...

The thing that hurts the most about those guys is that their wardrobes and lives actually ARE better than mine

I see this as something of a thrifting support group. I don't mind a little bit of constructive whining. And I agree, newbies have got to learn. We all bring home the occasional dud.

I picked up a Burberry novacheck shirt today, size XL, made in the UK. Its equivalent is listed on the Burberry website at $250. Maybe it will bring in a little pocket change. For me I got a pair of Martin Dingman braces that are either alligator or alligator grain, likely the latter, but I can imagine they're real.

I'll try to post a pic or two later. I enjoy the thread a lot more with pictures.

+1 There is never a thing in my neck of the woods that I have ever thrifted worthy of posting here save for one overcoat I saw with a fur lining, hand padded and the works that I passed on and missed when I went back.

If you don't like what's being posted...then stop reading the thread. It's all in good fun and I like reading (and posting) anything decent I find. It might not be much, but finding BB shirts and a nice Makers tie here and there are considered "finds" for my neck of the woods. In the two years I've been thrifting, I've never seen a RLPL or Burberry anything. Just roll with it and enjoy the thread.

Well I had a great week for shoes! 2 pairs of Florshiem Wingtips one being cordovan, Hanover suede, cordwainer cordovan, E.T. Wright and some cool Toschi shoes with carbon fiber on the inside.

Some of the shoes are on eBay and the rest will be on next week.

Dingman does belts in alligator so they could very well be the real thing. I found an odd pair of braces last year from Torino that appeared to be shell. I call them up and they confirmed that they were. You never know...

Had a good time this weekend. My mom, niece, and nephew joined me for a round at the thrifts. It turned out well.

AE shoe that looks like a 5th avenue, but had a different name(i'm lazy and it's out in my car right now)
smile.gif

NWT Ike Behar white dress shirt
NWOT Brioni striped dress shirt
JPress donegal tweed sportcoat
BB tan blazer
BB camel sportcoat
BB ecru dress shirt
4 paisley silk pocket squares from italy & japan
Onyx tuxedo cufflinks & studs
Charles Tyrwhitt dress shirt

Saw some other interesting but disappointing stuff... BB made in USA penny loafers, clearly not Aldens(??), two Oxxford orphaned suit jackets(gray pinstripe & brown glenplaid), Samuelsohn glenplaid orphan, and several Pink & Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, all the same size, with the pricetag punched through front and center on the collar.

Here's my two cents:

While I agree for the most part, Alan said it best - this thread is like a thrifting support group. We all have a common interest/hobby that is like an addiction. A good 80% of my forum participation occurs right here in this thread. I love hearing about other peoples finds, stories and also giving advice/helping out others. I do agree that there should be some restraint of posting finds. Don't clog up bandwidth with huge pictures and a paragraph bragging about a beat-up pair of no-name penny loafers you got for $10. Just common sense, really.

I'm sure we all have been guilty of whining about crappy finds, being in a rut of not finding anything and corrupt store managers or clerks. Sometimes we need to vent and the people here are the only ones who will know what the hell we're talking about and perhaps care a little about our situation. I know my fiance won't care one bit if I was beat to a pile of Lobb shoes by a eBay flipper and my friends or anyone else on this board won't really care if I haven't found a single thing in over 2 months. Sometimes we need that one guy who says "Keep your head up, things will get better. It's just a matter of time".

Also, I do agree that humor should definitely be tossed in from time to time. The gold hippo gave me a good laugh too.

Anyhoo, back on topic. Found a great pair of flat-front grayish-green cord trousers from Luciano Barbera. Judging by the fabric content tag, these are very close to new and were probably only worn once. $4.99. Found and passed on a nice side-vented 2 btn Canali suit jacket. Black with red pinstripes. Trousers no where to be found.

I'll check again when I go back on Friday, but I fear the jacket will be gone by then.

NO need at all to apologize. I have participated in the whining myself as any regular reader of this thread should know. Mine was a general rant aimed at steering the thread back in the direction of posting finds rather than commentary ... kind of ironic isn't it? Anyway, I'm as guilty as anyone, and just trying to get everyone (including me) on board. Also, I don't consider you a newbie.

We are very much in agreeance (that is a word). I just feel that as of late the thread content has been predominantly whiny, and I personally feel this has really detracted from the thread. Maybe I'm nostalgic for the gold old days where virtually every post was a super find. Just go back a couple hundred posts and see how awesome the posts were. It's not like that anymore for a number of reasons, but I'm just suggesting that we can all minimize the decline here if we post with discretion. I was a newbie once, and like everyone picked up a lot of crap before I learned through trial and error and WATCHING this thread religiously. I didn't post every polyester Pierre Cardin tie I brought home, and I don't think anyone should. But that's just me ...

No disrespect, but I'm going to totally disregard your comment for a number of reasons.

As always, Nakatu is a voice of reason. I totally agree. I wasn't trying to slam newbies or dictate what should and shouldn't be posted here. As I mention above, I'm as guilty as anyone for whiny posts as I've made them myself several times. But I don't think anyone can say that the last few pages have probably not been among the worst in this thread. I'm just trying to draw attention to that before the thread devolves any further. We all have a responsibility here to keep the standards of this thread high, because we are all contributors to it. I'm certainly not attempting to come across as a seasoned know-it-all looking to prey upon hapless newbies. That's not me at all, and frankly, I spend most of my time at Styleforum here at the thrifting thread because so many other threads/forums are full of egocentric assholes, as EBT so artfully alluded to. Nothing but respect for everyone here. I'm just putting my 2 cents forward in the hopes that we can work to maintain what has been in my opinion one of the best threads at Styleforum.

I missed all this but I'd like to echo Alan's and Nataku's comments about this being a support group. I've learned a lot here about what is and is not worth looking out for. Some of the stories here are like reading about lottery winners; it gets you all fired up to go out and try your luck, even though you know it's a long shot.

I would never have started op shopping if not for this thread. When I look in my wardrobe now, I see a whole bunch of clothes that I really love, that I would never have found if not for the inspiration of the intrepid hunters here.

Not much lately, but I did find a brand new Crumpler laptop bag. It still had its tags, and was even in the Crumpler logo store plastic wrap. We all have one already, so I onsold it to a friend for 3 times what I paid (still 1/3 of RRP). Smiles all around.

Okay, so I have 3 term papers due, all of them late, and work has piled up in the office. If I stop all of that to hit 2-3 thrifts on the way from the office to school does that mean I officially have a problem?
