I always google the names I find inside the clothes I thrift.

Hey Guys! Long time lurker, first time poster! I have enjoyed reading about everyone's finds! I have thrifted for a long time as well and have found some finds (like Kiton, Borrelli, Brioni)... but my husband (yes, I'm a woman) told me I needed to brag about my recent find! This is what I found...

An Oxxford Crest Super 100's Luxury Flannel 3-Piece Suit! I got it for $15 at my local Salvation Army. Front lower pockets are still sewn shut! It's a 48 R... and my husband plans on keeping it! Sorry for the bad pictures, I was in a rush.

+1. Interesting to see if they guy is just loaded and cleans house every few years or kicked the bucket. If the latter, a lot of times there will be an decent little article about the guy's life. Read about everyone from WWII heroes who won the Medal of Honor to CEOs of major corporations.

Nat, Hans and I have all commented approvingly. They don't get much airtime, but they're well made and well cut (imho). Apparently more popular over Europe way. If you search SF generally, someone once said he wouldn't buy them because the name is too close to the beginning of Hitler's name. I think that's silly, but brands have suffered for less substantial things than that. I wonder whether there's something to it ....

This is mega fake, correct? No country of origin tag either. I'm not the one that bought it for the record.

Completely fake. I've seen quite a few fake PRL cashmere sweaters that were actually made of cashmere, but was certainly not sold by PRL.

So, I have this DB SC. I have had it for months and months, I like it, I love it, it's deep purple herringbone baby alpaca, perfect color and softness, from a New Haven men's store (it ain't Brioni or Zegna for you label whores, hahahahahaha). It's un-resellable.

This jacket has some style problems. 2 sizes 2 big, gotta get sleeves taken up an inch or inch and a half (no faking this) and certainly if I want to wear as a blazer I need chrome or brass buttons. Also -- definitely needs some padding removed from shoulders.

My question to you gents is, what's your ceiling for tailoring a thrifted jacket, one you are very attached to? I have a master tailor who will do this work but it's at least $100 to do all it needs to be "right." I'm not talking garden variety pieces you find and might find again in your size after a year or so of hunting (don't tell me you're not patient enough to wait -- we all are or we'd be poasting somewheres else). I'm talking the one-of-a-kind piece you fall in love with, and when you keep it for a long time, don't fall out of love and rethrift or flip (when possible).This one's a DB, which complicates things (i.e. it can look dated to non-SF people hahahaha). But the fabric is in my little world of clothes, beyond effing superb, being possessed with an alpaca fetish and all. Never seen anything like it, probably never will again.

What is the most you guys have spent for tailoring on a thrifted piece? I am trying to determine if I am being stupid/delusional or if you guys have these same decisions yourself.

If you are secure enough in yourself and your sense of style and can make different pieces of garments work for you, then screw what everyone else thinks. I realized other than wearing trad clothing and the way they were intended to be worn, there are always people who will disagree with my sense of style if I were to venture outside of the safety zone to experiment, and to have fun with my clothes.

You know the old adage "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks."

+1, I should have a bed at my tailors, I feel like I live there. Time b4 my last recent visit, I had taken 19 items to him. Last visit was just 1 suit and my tuxedo + shirt(which is going to be a lot of work). I don't pay retail for clothing very often (thrift, trade, eBay) but I do pay retail to have them tailored. I probably spend close to 1500 or more a year there.

Paid a little more than thrift for this guy, but still a super-steep discount! Had to repair the vent in the back (just the seam, nothing major) but CHECK DIS. It's super recent too- last three years!

Crosby Square gunboats. One of them is missing its liner, size 11B, but Jesus Christ these things are TANKS. I believe they're from the 40's, not that they care! They look better than my less-than-year-old AE Sanfords!





Turnbull & Asser 46R- the weave makes me a bit uneasy- I think there might be a hole somewhere I'm missing :/

It's brand new to me (like so much else, including JAB boxers ) but I tried it on when I got home and IT FITS! Even the hoodie. Maybe it's not "age appropriate" to wear outdoors but I might start sleeping in it unless someone here tells me it's worth a hunnert or two in ebay. (Hah, as if.)

Spoiler: I'm going to say this gently.

You have some serious issues. That you would thrift a pair of boxers is bad enough. That they are JAB is even worse. That you would boast about it is, well, I'm not sure what it is, but it isn't normal.

I have thrifted a pair of boxers, but they were J. Crew and brand new, still in the package. I once thrifted a pair of woolen boot socks that I was positive were new, but I cleaned them anyway before wearing. I have thrifted Derek Rose silk pajamas. But boxers? To save, what, $5? Whoa.

My mother wears thrifted underwear and boasts about it. My mother also has a switch on her hot-water heater so that you have to plan 45 minutes in advance before washing your hands or doing the dishes. She figures it saves her about $10 a month in electricity. Maybe you should go thrifting with her. That's a haul I'd love to see. Or maybe not.

Please, no. I just wanted to know if they were, um, available.

I was kidding. But, yeah, my mom does thrift her underwear and can't understand why I do not. Then again, I have hot water on demand.

Whatever floats boats, it's all good. A lot of folks won't do secondhand pajamas. I didn't do pajamas at all until I scored the ones from Derek Rose. They are marvelous.

Oddly, I was checking the pajama rack when I found the JAB joints. I'm always on the lookout for something from Charvet or whatever just to have some luxe jammies! I recall someone here found some Hermes boxers, once. I can't recall if they wore them or sold them though.
