The official thrift/discount store bragging thread - Page 7311

I'm leaving on a road trip from Texas to NY and Boston Wednesday.  Plan to do a little thrifting in NYC or Boston.  If anyone cares to send me some good spots to go check it, it would be much appreciated!

@38R, eat a dick. Go thrift some more transformers and hello kitty video games in your shitty Nissan and leave the real thrifting the pros.

Now I'd like to derail the thread myself momentarily.

I'm a first generation American born to German immigrants. German was my first language and my first day of Pre-K I didn't speak a word of English. I still remember trying to Americanize some German words to communicate--mostly unsuccessfully, of course.

Blatant displays of national pride have been uncommon in many Germans because of that period from 1939-1945--really only during the World Cup do Germans run around with flags over their shoulders the way you'd see an American do on any given day. Well I picked up the sense--almost being ashamed--and it was made worse that I grew up in an area with a large population of Jews--seeing the first-, second-, and third-hand effects of the war tore me apart. I stopped speaking German for a long time and only identified if prompted, though I never lost my ability to understand the language.

In the past few years I've re-embraced my heritage and have started taking pride in it. A long history of producing some of the greatest minds in music, literature, art, and science shouldn't be erased by six years under a tiny Austrian's rule.

This World Cup has been amazing for me. I had family come over from Germany I hadn't seen in too long and we bonded over Fußball, among other things. I'm proud of their win not only for their incredible talent and sportsmanship, but for what they've done before the Cup and what they've built to last long after:

The first article I've linked talks mostly about the advantages Germany gained by building their own training complex, but what I find really remarkable is that £25 million was funneled into the Brazilian economy, using local labor to build the complex. Now that the cup is over, the resort will be opened to the public, creating jobs and strengthening tourism. The Germans even refurbished local existing soccer fields. But what I find most remarkable is that they also built a new youth soccer academy and expanded a local orphanage.

Article on training facility

This article talks about how the Germans are growing players at home. They now have academies where students study 34+ hours a week as well as play for the school's team. Students are told upfront it's unlikely many will become professional and education is the top priority. Every coach down to the youngest level is licensed. Coaches at the academies even generally have education backgrounds so questions about homework can be answered on the pitch. Most of the students at these academies go on to higher education.

Back to business. smile.gif

My wife studied in Freiburg in college, so we were rooting on the Germans. I got to go back with her for a very informal 10-year reunion, and it was cool to just hang out in a small town in southern Germany for a few days, then contrast it with the relative enormity of Berlin, where I had visited before but for a lame-o work conference.

I got a chuckle from this yesterday on NPR: http://wfae.org/post/germans-return-home-world-cup-already-worried-about-next-one

Why i said pass?   it reminds me of the Holland football team's colors.  and i'm not a fan in general of people dressing older than they are.   so, yeah.

also, why no belt?  Brown shoes for the win!  The Tie knot?   Legit....  it's nice, but un-finished. so i like it a little, but not one of the best on SF ever.  just good.

isn't it time you actually grew up?

when you want to see "Pro level" thrifting, as i've said before. i will host you (and your wife) for a holiday  (at my home) . and drive you around thrifting.   from Porshe's to Denim's. you got the money? i got the thrift.       (Do NOT misinterpret the fun between me and Spoo)   it's a "Car Guy" thing. :fence:

Eazye, I totally dig the fit but I feel like it ages you. Slightly too well put together, I guess

there are many opinions floating around here.   as other's can, I can comment on a fit also.

There's one way to solve the issue between you guys (@eazye & @size 38R) you guys agree to 3 theme "fits" and we vote on who did it best. Afterwards you guys just leave each other alone. Yes I agree Eazye is usually provoked, but I would just ignore all the little jabs.
