Just watched episode 2 of Put This On--they go thrifting in NY in a two-block radius. If you haven't seen it yet and you live in a small town, you may not want to watch it.

Is that what thrifting is for many of you? I have about a dozen thrift/consignment shops in my city; another dozen within a 3 hour drive circuit. Two of these shops produce things with any regularity, and many of them handle women's clothes only. You big city rollers really have it good.

(I haven't been thrifting in a couple weeks so nothing to report. )

ETA: I watched this before YoungAmerican posted his post. Funny coincidence though. And YA: good show as always--keep it up!

That's certainly not what it's like for me in LA. But nothing's like that in LA. In many ways, LA's not a city . There are a few places in LA, as in most cities, where there are clusters of 2-3 stores, but it's not like New York. I like shopping in SF, where you have similar clusters, but because SF's so much smaller and denser, you don't have to drive 15-20 minutes in between.

In New York, stores are smaller, prices are higher, etc... one of the stores we went to in that segment was a vintage store (a cheap one, but still, not a charity shop). One of them was a Salvation Army, with pretty good stock, but the prices were about twice what they'd be in LA. That T&A shirt, which I traded to someone here, by the way, was $7.99. Which is still worth getting, but more expensive than usual.

I love that advice from logsdail at the end - If you put the jacket on... and you look in the mirror... and think Wow, I look good!.... go with it!

Logsdail was and is an awesome guy.

I will mention that the coat that Logsdail was guessing retails for $100 probably retails for about $500 - iirc it was either J Crew or BR.

I've auditioned many B&W speakers, and must say, they certainly are among the best. Probably the best "value" in high end audio. By that I mean, their $80k Nautilus could easily compete with a $300k Wilson set up.

I've only ever actually owned a low-end set of B&W speakers I thrifted. They were bookshelf, from the ZMF series. Decent for sure, but I heeded to the call of profit. Plus, I have stacks of speakers already.

Whether I'm keeping this sub depends on how it blends with my home-engineered Focal bookshelfs, which, due to size constraints, are my main set-up at the moment. However, I thought this find yesterday was awesome, but then I walked into a different store today, 30 miles away from where I found the sub, and found this:



B&W HTM2 center channel

Hopefully a couple more days and I'll find a pair of 800-series or Nautilus sitting in a thrift store and I'll have no choice but to keep all these beautiful speakers.


Also noteworthy: a 100% cashmere N-Peal sweater ($2!) in a gorgeous navy blue, for my father, since he's supremely jealous of my recent audio finds.

I wondered about that too. The coat wasn't on screen long, but $100 really just seemed to represent what he thought it was actually worth.

4.99-599 is standard here, but 7.99 is pretty common. The few places that sell shirts for $2-3 buy their stock from the big used-market clearing centres; by the time it gets here it's been picked over buy retail buyers at least a few times and there's nothing at all left worth buying.

Also picked up a navy Hickey Freeman for Nordstrom blazer 42R (not sure yet if I'll keep it) and Ermenegildo Zegna purple with white stripes shirt, roughly a 16/33 and available.

Passed on two Canali orphans and a Samuelsohn orphan.

Also, passed on this...



Gianni Versace white linen suit... passed mostly because the store wanted $50 for it. Was it a bad call to leave it behind?
