i'm calling BS. and the idea of nat, who regularly finds amazing stuff, pulling this crap is hilarious. i keep thinking there must be more fine clothing sold per capita in minneapolis than any other city in the us.

I think its cyclical, and a lot of luck, and not necesarilly a direct product of where you are thrifting.

Im in CA, and I have been striking out lately.....what I have found recently has been pretty amazing (vicuna kiton, etc.) but when I've found something, its been ONLY that one thing. A trip to 5 or 6 stores will produce maybe 1 or 2 notable items, if that. Hence the reason I've been spending a loty of time at Marshall's recently. No Nataku hauls of 20 pristine Isaia and RLPL SC's here......

I'd argue that the quality of items that you thrift is pretty directly tied to your location. Obviously, e-Commerce and all that. But, if your surrounding demographic doesn't buy good ****, you aren't gonna find good ****.

I dunno man. I remember Pejsek bragging semi-weekly about his absolutely insane finds (Kiton cashmeres, bespoke Huntsmans, Attolini and Loro Piana, etc) and all the stuff the flippers got away with. That coupled with the very consistant finds of members such as Darkmatter, Xenos and JonHecht (who found a super recent Hermes suit and pulled out quite a few red label Isaia too). It all really comes down to what is sold where and in what quantity. I honestly think there is way more high-end clothing to go around in SoCal (and the bay area) than in my neck of the woods. I have still yet to find any Kiton. I did make a thrift trip down there last time I was in the area (my wife is from SoCal and we were visiting in-laws) and I was super impressed with the findings in two specific areas. I could just sense that they were gold-mine areas.

As horses_ass put it, you need the clothing to be purchased in the first place to be able to find it second hand. Neiman Marcus and Hubert White are the only local clothing shops around here that sell high-end men's tailored stuff. NM is our only high-end department store. There are small hole-in-the-wall boutiques that cater to SW&D stuff, but if you're looking for Oxxford or Isaia, you have two choices. In Calif or Chicago there are quite a few to choose from, not to mention all the brick and mortar boutiques.

I'm not saying my area sucks, I'm just saying that it seems the Calif. folk seem to have it really good (though we all have dry spells too, no matter where you live).

Kinda....I know for a fact, the majority of the items that come to my local Salvation Army, are in fact sent from the regional distribution center. So yea, maybe the demographic in New Jersey buys better stuff then people in South Dakota (no offense to you South Dakotans), but if I go to a Salvation Arm an hour away in the ghetto of NJ I'll have the same basic odds at finding something.
