The official thrift/discount store bragging thread

I'm on a biz trip in MI (Lansing). Hit a local and picked up a Harris Tweed in tan and baby blue herringbone, 1/4 lined. Haven't measured yet, but I'm guessing it's close to a 38 or 40S. (Available) Pics when I get back.

I may have a bit more time later today, but likely after business hours. Anyone local to Lansing with recommendations for places to hit (I will promise to proxy in your size, as quid pro quo), please PM me.

What some of you guys don't get is that the trades ARE kept to PMs. In the past week I've done at least four trades after posting my "brags" and have contacted others to do the same. That's why you brag, let people see it, and then they contact you, herp derp.

Picked up this Magee Donegal Tweed coat the other day. Quite finely constructed, and the tweed itself is beautifully woven. 44L

"Thrifted" this mannequin from acosbysweater as well the Hugo Boss tie and the Gitman shirt, both available (mannequin NOT available), but here are the first shirt and suit photos! Now to figure out what to do with the pants as the jacket looks SO nice! I also need to get a white sheet put up for the background. Suggestions welcome.

Hoping you guys could help me out. I saw a pretty nice Pendleton sport coat in a 44 with some wear on the leather buttons and one missing button on the front, but otherwise it was in great shape. Then I saw this on the back:




What is it? At first I thought it was a pocket, but it's obviously not. Did someone let this out and wear it like this? That doesn't make any sense, but I have no idea what's up.

Right on the center seam? That's there to give you more room through the shoulders when shooting or doing other sports. Sometimes you'll see them on the sides behind the armpits.

A day of near misses... There was a nice Aquascutum glenplaid suit (about a 38) but the lining was worn through behind the left pocket. There was a nice H. Freeman & Sons black and blue houndstooth about the same size but there was a stain on the pants I wasn't sure would come out.

There was also a nicely made suit that I liked around the same size from Fenwick Clothiers in NYC... Never heard of it and no matches on eBay. Anyone know anything about it?

I hate to tell this to the forum, but I am changing my habits as to how I conduct business here. This change means:

1) I will only post finds I make that are in my size and are not for sale or trade. That way I can gloat and brag about it, do the whole stick my tongue out waggle my fingers on the side of my head thing.

2) I now know enough people, that anything "not my size", I will PM first the relevant people, and if any dibs, I will add it to box of items I reserve for trades or cheap flips. Any non dibbed items from PM's, I will now post these in the "For Trade / Flip" thread or they go on the Bay so I do not stockpile to the point of hoarding.

The main issue with (2) is that many members that are not even contributing to this thread are throwing their hat into the ring through PM's. I received around 50 PM's from people last time I posted big finds, and only around 4 of those PM's were from people contributing to this thread. This is one of the main reasons why I am changing my attitude to how I distribute information regarding finds.

To most of you, it will seem like I have given up thrifting entirely as my posts diminish to occasional finds I decide to keep for myself. Not giving up thrifting, just changing the way I spread information.

The first two points, if followed by other members here reduces this thread to its original state, which is of bragging interesting finds. Trades can always happen through PM's, and there is another thread opened up where you can post all your wonderful finds "not in your size" and you lay out clearly whether you want trades, cash, or solid 24kt gold bars. Also, it would be nice if members here put as much effort into PM etiquette as they do laying out the costs of their items and pictures / measurements. People should lay out their terms in the beginning, that way people don't waste each others time. I have been forced in a position by some of you where I had to be rude, and I hate being rude to people.

Other points / rant:

• Examples of thrift selling and trading conducive to building an infectious community spirit: Three new forum members have been dealing with me recently. Their attitude is phenomenal. I wanted some items, had no immediate trades in their sizes, they sent me the items in good faith. No BS, no I want everything under the sun, just said, enjoy this find, if you find killer stuff, send my way. I have thought to myself, thats the f$$king spirit! How will this generosity reward them? Well, I pay generosity by being doubly generous back. One of these chaps sent me a nice suit, he is getting a killer Cucinelli Raincoat as just rewards. Did I think for one minute I was missing out on 500bucks on eBay? F*ck no, only as I type this has the thought entered my noggin and I feel extremely happy this chap is getting such a nice item. Other brilliant members: One member here you all know and love, I wanted a few shirts from him. He was like "oh well, just pay what I paid for them". I find an Alexander Mcqueen shirt, I gave it to him for what I paid. Just straight up decent, in line with the community spirit. Not once did either of us scratch our heads and consider eBay value - these are thrift finds, we treated them as such. Of course nobody here would trade a Kiton shirt for a Eddie Bauer shirt, but I see no problem trading 1 Kiton for 1 Ricci or Brioni. My favorite recent PM went along the lines where a new member / flipper said to me "Oh my Kiton shirt is worth 2 of your Stefano Ricci's" - my reply to these statements is the generic "take a hike pal". He then came back and changed his mind, but I was no longer interested in dealing with him. He thinks I am rude, but so be it, I am not here to mess around in a wall of intellectual gymnastics over the perceived value of a thrift find.
• It is your attitude to milk every penny out of the item, I actually suggest you do not post in this thread and go straight to eBay or B&S. Very simple logic, but I am getting irritated at the concept, "I found this for $10, you guys can have it for near MSRP". If you find a Rolex watch, sure post and brag about it, but don't say "the first to stump up $20K gets the watch". Better yet, don't post at all if you do not intend to keep the watch, mum's the word, go straight to the Bay or PM certain fellows here with the find.
• If I do PM you about an item I am interested in, I mainly do trades, I do not buy as a general rule. If I do purchase, then I expect common courtesy which is if you sell something to me, write down your out of pocket expenses, and add in a little overhead, perhaps you double them or triple your out of pocket expenses depending on the item. I will not even get close to paying anything near an eBay auction. I will make exceptions to this rule if the item in question is something extremely rare or unique - but these kind of items are few and far between. You will know if this is one of your items, and it wont be a thrifted Fray shirt, well used Brioni pants, or even for that matter, a Ralph Lauren Purple Label suit. A Vicuna Kiton jacket, for example, would be one of those items that are break bankworthy.
• If you get an item from me, and it is not a trade, then I work on this principle: What I pay, I double it and that will be what you pay, unless we are really good buddies where I will break bread differently. I do this because all the money (and it is much less than eBay) I do make from some of you guys, I use to thrift again. Thrift money to continue thrifting - it works like that in my book.
• I think it is perfectly acceptable if people post 2nd rate item finds like Lauren Ralph Lauren. There does not need to be an exclusive rule which states only Hermes, Kiton etc finds get posted. This thread, very importantly, serves as a source of information. Without Nataku, Digmenow and others posting these offbeat brands, all of us here would be completely ignorant to other possibilities. Furthermore, if someone posts these lower tier items, he will be in a position to learn what constitutes a good find from a bad find. Whether we give snarky remarks or gentlemanly advice, he will be in a position to learn from it. We should ultimately want to help others.
