What do you guys think about the new movie having james only drink beer?
I just saw a clip that proved otherwise, but maybe it didn't make it to the final cut. Interesting.

Thrift fit.

Went off to a colloquium today but made mistake last week of wearing a full Tom Ford suit. Decided to tone down considerably and bump shoulders with 3 other fellows whom at least come with proper shoes, sport coats, and long sleeve shirts. After much deliberation, my entire outfit today was thrifted and I felt rather pleased with the way it turned out.

1000

Outfit:

SC - Faconnable Talieur Navy (thrifted by Mexicutioner)
Pants - RRL Green chinos (thrifted)
Shirt - Ralph Lauren Polo made in Italy (thrifted)
Shoes - Allen Edmonds (thrifted)

Didn't Spoo tease some kind of super-mega-awesome item from a consigner, like 10 pages ago? What happened to that?

Whew! Finally caught up on all the hundreds of unread posts.

I've been MIA in this thread and at the thrifts because I've been working like crazy trying to do right by my internship. Finally found time for a quick thrift at my local VV tonight and, rather fittingly to this thread as of late, I passed on a $12 Zegna tie, $40 Z Zegna suit, $30 Boss SC and $20 Southwick SC. Passed on a wicked Gucci overcoat with a small hole in the back and a Canali overcoat because I can't be bothered to figure out how much it would cost to ship a heavy overcoat. Did grab a Band of Outsiders button-down I'm going to try to squeeze into (damn small sizing!) and a Hilditch & Key shirt that fits, pics maybe later.

And now I'll try to address everything that caught my eye from the last few days. Feel free to ignore this post if you just want sweet thrift Appreciation.

Maybe this breaks the first and second rule of fight club... but I wonder if it would be possible to establish some standard metrics for thrifting. eg:
-hot streak (store visits per single item with over $100 profit at market)
-grind value (store visits per item with any flippable value)
-sunk cost per visit (gas, time, etc) over net sales
-some way to calculate which stores or neighborhoods are most likely to yeild
...
At this point I only really buy stuff I need for myself or something I just cant pass up. Mostly because of Canada Post's expensive shipping rates.

Some of us live closer than you think. If you find any 40-42R-L or nice size 12D shoes, you got a friend in Toronto.
The second is a dark green Raf Simons overcoat. The tag indicates it's from the 2000-1 F/W season. It's a 38 (48 European), so too small for me. I'll be chucking it up on eBay.

Late to the party on this, but that's pretty damn sweet. Thank god it's too small.

Okay, so some of you mar-farkers have rubbed off some of that tasty thrift karma on Mr. Customer. I've been looking for something like this for six months, especially for winter. I pulled an impromptu stop at a small SA near work and came across this awesomeness:

Another beauty. I left behind some Mezland split-toes today... should I go back?

first ever thrift fit pic

seasonal beard (free)
bb super soft herringbone sc (9.99)
blue ocbd (1.99)
bb makers tie, unobtrusive pattern (0.99)
chinos (5.99 + 7 in tailoring)
belt (retail)
basically like new park avenues (standard ebay bidding war price)

Get thee to a tailor for those sleeves, dude.

Not sure if I can post pics yet, but I picked these AE's up at a Thrift just last week. Size 14B, but fit like a 12-13. Available.
Hugo Boss Pics.........
This is far higher quality than any Boss I have ever seen.
- Fully canvassed
- Great Fabric (angora, cashmere, wool)
The label just does not look Hugo Boss to me. How come it is in three quality leagues above the Hugo Boss found in department stores?
I am erring towards considering that this is a separate brand. I cannot read the writing though - so any of you chaps that can read that font, let me know
wink.gif

Oh yes - from the tag, name the suit maker? Tag does not look like anything I am familiar with.
Would like some help ID'ing it just for curiosity sake.

Heh, I too suspected Baldessarini. I've been lucky enough to find several suits from this label recently. Kept one and it's gorgeous, one of my absolute favourite suits. Never pass on this brand.

Ok, first real thrift fit. (my previous being all blackwatch with blackwatch umbrella). Let me know what you think in general, and also in particular as what else I could wear with these pants given their odd color and weave (herringbone). These things are baller though, so i need some ideas. Stance is weird but natural lol, im a stocky dude. HF Blazer thrifted by me for 5, brioni shirt from my man CottonDockers, Pants Zanella Platinum unicorns thrifted by me for $4, shoes Church's consul custom grade Mercuryman via EazyE, not seen Baume and Mercier watch.

Jacket looks really short in this fit... or are you just wearing your pants really low? Colours are nice though.

The problem with thrift stores pricing things with Ebay prices: thrift stores aren't Ebay.
I am fine with paying a premium for a nicer item. $12 for Allen Edmonds vs $6 for other shoes. $9-10 for a RLPL shirt vs $5 for Gap. Fine. But $40 for Allen Edmonds, when they're lucky to sell for that much on Ebay? Ebay prices are driven by one thing: the size of the audience, and selection. I can sit on my couch, and be guaranteed to find a pair of shoes in my size on Ebay. In a thrift store? I have to spend time, gas money, and hope to find something in my size, then hope it's nice. Then find out they want Ebay prices? No, no, and no. A FAIR price for a nice item in a thrift store is probably 25% of Ebay prices, and that's just reality. You want Ebay prices, spent time photographing it, listing it, measuring it, and exposing it to a worldwide audience.
THIS. With eBay prices comes a certain assurance of quality and general peace of mind that whatever you're buying isn't going to have a big hole in it you didn't notice at first. It especially pisses me off when a thrift prices something way up and then doesn't even have the decency to put it in their stupid little showcase. If you're aware the item is of higher value, why are you leaving it out with everything else? Isn't that the point of the showcase? Oh no wait, the point of the showcase is to charge $30 for a Tommy Hilfiger tie.

^^^ While these particular ones aren't really my style, Lobbs are a ridiculous find. I'm jealous because it has been literally months since I've had a decent shoe find up here. Well done!

Me too, maybe with a note on the package stating do not open until Christmas.

"This package will self destruct if opened before Christmas!"

I'm the same. My wife and I have the exact same birthday and it's in November, so from now until Christmas I often give in and give her gifts early. I'm going to try to hold out this year and I just bought her something today...
Ralph Lauren silk dress, made in Italy.

Did you thrift this?

Ohhhh, you guys were playing Assassins Creed multi-player game! I thought you got your hands on a copy of AC 3, or was the latest 4...

Lol, I was waiting for that!

One of my favorite things about thrift stores is seeing the brands that they decide are worth more than others. Usually its a lot of low to mid level stuff like Club Monaco or Gap which the person who does the pricing obviously views as being worth a lot more.

Let's hope they keep this going.

next two are to try to better illustrate color.

Bro, your right sleeve seems to be a bit lower than the left. Is your right shoulder a bit lower than your left?

One goodwill near me matches or exceeds outlet store prices for just about every brand. That is a bit ridiculous. $45 for BB pants, 25 for a BB tie. I think the true sleeper brand, among high end, is RLPL. Even with the Internet, the average person that knows very little about clothing might not discover that it's more than just another Ralph Lauren line. One goodwill that comes in 2nd in high prices after the above mentioned GW prices RLPL like all of the other RL/Polo stuff. Yeah, some esoteric brands may also be sleepers, but you'll quickly find out via an Internet search. They see Ralph Lauren and they just assume. That has been my experience, anyway b

My god, today while I was inspecting a Burberry London SC with a moth hole, I saw a caucasian brunette woman with the tiniest waist but with the roundest and phatest booty I've seen in months walked in a local GW! Jeez, I just about dropped the jacket! I mean it was so round that every time she told a step, her booty was winking at me!

Anyhow, passed on a cuffed, double pleaded Canali pants with pee stain. Picked up a Uniqlo linen blend shirt with weird wires in it for $4.
