I saw someone wear it between Cmas and New Years. If described to me beforehand, I wouldnt have thought it looked good. It did. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I did it myself on New Years Eve. Many compliments from the ladies. That in itself makes it acceptable casual wear to me.

Yes, I realised this recently only after getting French cuffs on all my shirts
I'll have to get some more barrel-cuff shirts sometime, but if I do up the cuffs barrel-style but with cuff-links I don't think most people would notice. I advise silk-knots for this as having one side of a metal cuff-link digging into your wrist is not comfortable...
The simpler solution is to get cuff links that look like buttons, and wear them barrel style. Something like this:
