I used to own the first E class with the ORIGINAL double round lamps, but that has nothing to do with this. The fact is that MB usually comes out with the all the design trends first (including the lamps in question), then the cheaper makers copy the design characteristics to make their lines look more luxurious to the untrained eye. That`s just how design works (not just for cars, but fashion too).

I saw a documentary in Japan years ago, and the Lexus people openly admitted that their goal was to copy MB cars. It`s pretty obviously that`s true because it shows in the designs of all their cars.

Of course Lexus is a good car, and I am sure MB copies some parts/methods too, but to say MB copied the Lexus lamps is not correct at all in my opinion.

That`s why I said it was an EVOLUTION of the original double, round lamp design. It`s quite obvious that the outline is the same as the current cars you mentioned, while keeping the double lamp character of the original round lamp design.

The S, CL and C classes have nice headlights. These on the new E are trying too hard; the only reason they're split in two is because MB wants to make sure you know it's an E.

The SL headlights are sinfully hideous; but then, the car's overall design has not aged well.

I think the current E-Class before the mid-cycle refresh was the best looking. I appreciate the fact that they're trying to make it look more modern but I just don't see that fitting in with the brand. The S-Class grew on me when it came out but the C-Class is so hideous and strangely proportioned, I don't even bother trying to get used to it. And I really wish they didn't do anything with the SL and SLK. I actually really loved them until the new headlights came about. It's kinda like when Christopher Bailey put out those shocking neoprene trenches. I was a little appalled at first but after a few minutes, I really liked it. I'm hoping the new direction MB is taking can grow on me. BMW and Lexus did, but Acura and MB so far are not impressing me.

Those double headlamps were derived from the '60s headlamps called leichtenheiten, or something of that sort.
