What to do in Los Angeles? - Page 2

Any recommendations for restaurants where one can eat alone without looking terribly pathetic?  I believe there is no sight more sad than someone eating alone, so I'm looking for something low key.
I was in L.A. on business for two months a little over two years ago and knew almost no one there.  As a result, I dined in restaurants alone all the time (didn't want to do the takeout thing every night) and thought nothing of it.  Then again, I often see movies alone as well, so YMMV.  I loved The Newsroom (across the street from The Ivy) for breakfast.  You can dine in front of the sushi bar at Matsuhisa if you feel self-conscious about being by yourself.

OK, I've given in and decided to rent a car. There are only three things I absolutely must do: Interview at USC, eat at In-N-Out Burger, and go to the Brioni store on Rodeo Drive. On my own I am not the most sociable person, so I imagine the only way I'm going to make it to any clubs is if some of the other interviewees I meet are up for it.  Supposing I can find some people up for going out, where should I go that is very little hassle, and what should I take to wear? Any recommendations for restaurants where one can eat alone without looking terribly pathetic?  I believe there is no sight more sad than someone eating alone, so I'm looking for something low key. Thanks.
from usc, take vermont ave north. as soon as you pass hollywood blvd there's a place on the right called "fred 62." eat there. it's a cool place in a tragically hip sort of way, and the food is good and cheap. if you want to find some less than obvious places check out spaceland, the echo, or something downtown. if you want something more top 40, then turn around and head west on sunset blvd. you'll pass through hollywood. if you want a meet market hottest chicks that are probably out of your league l.a. experience go to "the sunset room." it's a half block south of sunset. i can't remember the street but pick up an l.a. weekly and you'll find it. it's east of the strip, close to the cineramadome. the actual strip has become way too commercial. you'll see lots of trendy hip-hop nonsense there. all the kids from the surrounding suburbs go there on the weekends. if that's your thing, go for it.

Its kind of tough to suggest something w/o knowing more about you, what you like, where you're from, etc... You've come off as a conservative guy, so we don't know if that means you would get morally offended by some of the wilder stuff in LA. And, when I travel, I hate to go and do something which I could have done at home. This is probably one of the dorkiest things you could do, but you could also buy one of those star maps and drive around searching for celebrities' homes. Don't expect to see any celebs, but you'll get a good idea of LA afterwards. Maybe, even go to Disneyland in Anaheim if you're willing to drive. If you go on weekday, the lines aren't too bad. Definitely, look for Tommy Burgers. I personally prefer it to In-N-Out, and they're both only located in SoCal. And, remember, don't talk about how you don't want to be a doctor unless you're compensated enough. It comes off as crass and unprofessional.

Anyone know any good clubs, bars, lounges in LA for a straight guy? I'm going to be there April 22-29th.

You don't have time to do much at all. On Thursday night I would suggest going to the Edison downtown if you want a drink. Nice crowd, you have to wear dress shoes and a collard shirt there. The Standard there is good too. Its close, and you shouldn't stay out too late anyways the night before your interview. LA Live is by the Staples Center...a few restaurants. After the interview, I would suggest going back downtown and taking the metro rail somewhere like hollywood. its the subway in LA....shouldn't take too long...you can walk around a bit. Its actually a bit hokey to be honest though....but you're not renting a car at least you can get out a bit and see something out here. Hollywood kind of sucks but you can take tours and shuttles to Rodeo, etc. Get some Dim Sum on Saturday AM in Chinatown...or eat at the Pantry next to Staples Center. edit: nm. this is from 2005. haha.

Go to the Westside. Venice, Santa Monica, Hermosa, Manhattan.

Stay out of west hollywood and your fine. There is a reason its zip code is 90069.

Its not like everyone here is a flaming homo but if the line to get in to a place is a dudes in leather chaps, you might want to find a new place.

It was still good advice and I'll check out those places. Thanks! Sorry to resurrect this old thread.

Regarding eating alone: Check out Jose Andreas' Bazaar Restaurant at the SLS Hotel in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills area. You can go there after visiting Brioni and Rodeo Drive. http://www.opentable.com/rest_profile.aspx?rid=24940

Top floor of The Huntley in Santa Monica if you want to relax, eat and have a few drinks.
