I've been looking for those for ages too mate.
I know that the chaps used to wear wing tips back in the day , but I think MoM said that the late Mods wore a clumpier brogue. I know that's what all the late 70's/early 80's Skinheads were wearing round our way, not an original shape, but I prefer them.
Albion, remember these Army Cadet shoes? Early 80s vintage. I'm sure lads wore these as either a nod towards 'Smooths' or just cos they were shiny! (and cheap)

Saying that I might get a pair!

I remember seeing those shoes around....I always hated them...Neither myself or my mates would have worn those in the 80's...

It was a uniform in the sense that some things were accepted and others were not but it was not like a school uniform that demands total compliance.

I think that just about says it. The one thing which worries me about the word 'uniform' is that it's what the media and the older generation called it when they were slagging us off. They were insinuating we were all sheep for wearing what they saw as exactly the same clothes as each other, and at the same time saying we were in some way para-militaristic. They often referred to the crop as 'a military haircut' and to DMs wrongly as 'army boots'.

My mum would say this and curl her lip. I would say, "Mum, it's a bloody fashion not a uniform. There is a difference."

That was the one time that my dad stood up for me, and showed that he understood what it was like to wear the same style of clothes as your mates but with individual points. He said to mum, "Look, when I was a young man in the 1930s, my friends and I affected a golfer look. We all wore plus fours. One of us wore a blue sweater and blue socks, another worse a red sweater and red socks, a third wore a yellow sweater and yellow socks, and so on."

I thought, "Nice one. dad."

The simple look, the suit i am wearing in this pic is the exact copy of my first suit in 69, Dark blue Dormeiul mohair, My mate Tom is wearing a very similar suit, Yes keep it simple.

And a very nice suit it is too Roy! Of course it's just my humble opinion as an observer but the suit and tie look you're both sporting and the overall simplicity appeals a lot more than the open-necked check shirt with suit combo. Lots of details and loudness seem to spoil the look really, at least in my book it does...

You know, I really wish I still had that picture of myself from 'back in the day' wearing an open-necked Ben Sherman with a suit!

Basically it's also the fact that young men can get away w/a lot more I meant. The drawing John posted with the guy in the fawn suit and navy Ben is a perfect example of a nice summer look...

I know we have seen this before and debated the historical accuracy but it does show a look that I recall from back in the day - the suit sans tie. As I said this is more for summer and casual occasions.

To be honest,M-o-M,it did become a Uniform.Crombies,Harringtons,White Sta Prests-it was all there.That is why I prefer the earlier days,you had a less rigid "Code".Some of the time it only lasted a couple of weeks-other times(such as Jungle Greens)it caught on big time.

Now believe it or not,these were worn in the early days(before Brogues,Royals etc.).It was about the time that Army Coats were worn-circa `67/68.You could buy these as ex RAF Shoes.

See! We were cool I remember getting loads of clothes from army surplus stores (that smell)

In the early days,used to go "Lawrences Corner" for the stuff.Still there I believe.Yes you are right they did smell!Though the Shoes were brand new.

To be honest,I stopped wearing the Harrington(in the 60s) for that very reason.Look a little kinder on it now.

I'd like the originals to elaborate on that please. IIRC it said something like anything sufficed as long as it wasn't fashion in Jim Ferguson's Fashion Notebook (coats in this case that is) as for the early days...
