After paying Import VAT cost me £295.
For some reason they come only in Black and Chilli brown, Loake do the same in the same colours, no Ox Blood, cant remember if the Royal Gibson came in Ox blood, i also had Black back then.

I know the split toed gibson had been around in America for years by then, but for the originals, when did you see Gibsons being worn by the young english (what would become) skinheads?
I'm assuming different times in different areas as with many things.

I bought my first pair (brown) in late 1967 / early '68 in Blackpool.

For me it was 70, I did not notice them before that,
Got mine from the Squire shop, They was a alternative to Brouges and Plain caps.
Again classic footwear, adopted by Skinheads

No, they weren't. Up North brogues, loafers, Gibsons, etc of the day were selected for look rather than brand, and the look was more rounded than the wing-tip shape of Royals. Damn, this is hard to describe! If only I still had all the kit in a box in the loft!

How many times I have said that,Mate. Also it would show the variations that were around, especially the different parts of London.
Yes,Lasttye, that was when I got my Pair-again in Timpsons. To see how that chain of Shoe Shops have gone from what they were,to a Repair and Key Cutting Shop. How very sad.

My footwear journey was like this in the late 60s early 70s

1968 - brown Solatio lace up (like ones Bunty's brother was wearing in the recent pic)
1969 – black Royal brogue
Early 1970 – ‘cordovan’ colour Royal plains
Mid 1970 – a toss up between a Royal Gibson and a Solatio shoe of similar design and the Solatio won (big error!)
Late 1970 – black tasselled loafer from the Bronx Shop Ilford
Early 1971 – brown loafer with a basket weave vamp (Lotus, I think)

I remember both brown and black Gibsons but not burgundy

Just to add Allen Edmonds are not available in UK.

The Squire and Ivy shop Gibson were different. The split did not go so far up the vamp. They were more like what is called Norwegian style - except the mudguard around the apron was not stitched. It was a thin bit of piping. Most Royals lace ups sold at the time were black. More like this http://www.theshoemart.com/cgi-bin/c...UCHER_CALFSKIN There was an inexpensive brand of shoes called Tuff in the UK at the time and apron on those was not dissimilar.
