This is a thread in a forum about fashion. If people at the G-corporation do not have the intelligence to notice this, but instead want to equate it with racist 'bonehead' sites, then they are fools.

To rename the thread would simply hide as effectively as a G ban. This thread is about original skinhead fashion.

This thread is not about racism and doesn't support racism. It is truthful about the level of racism in British society around 1969 and the level of racism in skinheads at the time. Most of our dads fought in WW2 anyway, and if we had gone around going 'Sieg Heil' they would have leathered us.

This thread is not about right-wing politics. We keep politics off this thread, except for being truthful - same as above - about the politics of Britain in the late 60s, where it is relevant. The people on here all have their own political views, and it's a wide and diverse spread; we're largely silent about them, because that's not what the thread's all about. If we want to express our current views openly we do it elsewhere.

This thread is, in effect, fashion and social history. It is turning out to be a valuable resource.

IMHO anyway.

As a postscript, I'm sorry that the book is taking longer than I had hoped. The job isn't as easy as I thought it would be and it's getting increasingly difficult to find spare time. Nevertheless, I'm determined that it WILL get done.

I'll go further and say we should put something like what I say above to the admin of this site and request that they draw G's attention to it.

I'm as sick as anybody else here is of the misappropriation of the word 'skinhead' by groups of people who are nothing like what we were back in the day. I'm okay with you blokes and women of later generations who are interested in original fashions etc, or who are doing your own thing - that's entirely different. But one thing this thread HAS done is put a lot of the record straight, and we should be allowed to go on doing it.

Pathetic, childish and born of pure ignorance. But the lads at the big corps control much of the internet and have much more power and say in these things than the likes of me having the odd sarcastic rant. So if its change or close down, its not really a problem.
There's plenty of skinhead forums around. Most I've barely looked at and the ones I have have been, in my view terrible; rarely focussed around pure original skinheads but merely skirting round the edges rather than getting down to the nitty gritty.
Partly what set this apart is that it looked in detail into the transition from mod to skinhead - the time before it was called 'skinhead', looking at where the styles came from, how they progressed and what they ended up as. As I've said on here before, its a shame the name skinhead didn't die off in the early 70s instead of being used to describe all kinds since (revival skins, two tone skins, Oi!, queers, nazis, short haired hooligans, just blokes with short hair etc etc). But seeing as that's happened, the word will always have different meanings to different people, rightly or wrongly.

The word Mod, on the other hand, hasn't been half as bastardised. A few lads in their 40s might think it means Jam fans in Parkas covered in tagret patches but the name is largely stuck back where it belongs and often dragged up to remember a handfull of fistey youths who punched a few Rockers down at the seaside.

I reckon summet like "beyond Mod" or "Post Mod"
Or you could include the word 'Ivy' but that crosses over with the pure American college look enthusiasts and gets mixed up in the Ivy influences in Mainstream fashion of the past few years.
Or if its to not frighten off potential interest, it could be something like "From Mod to Suedehead", "Suedhead roots".

Just a thought anyway as I need to get back to work!

And by the way, whilst them jackets from Aero are probably top notch quality and worth every penny, they don't look like the original ones as they're a different cut, style, leather etc. And if ye've got 400+ quid to spend, just go on ebay and buy a 60s suede one of one of the expensive yank vintage dealers. All depends on what look you're after.

Well let's think of all the other things they called us:

Totters - probably won't do, because 'totting' is collecting scrap.

Spike heads - maybe, but please Lord, not 'Spy kids'!

John Boys - because we called everyone 'John'.

Boot boys - became too much associated with long hair and wide jeans...

Bovver boys - too much to do with fighting and not fashion. In any case this 'boys' theme is neglecting the 'girls'.

Peanuts - bird food.

This might be a bit of a mouthful but something like Mod to Suedehead - Class of 69 might just do it, if we really must change.

At the moment I like" Mod to Suedehead".Could collect a more diverse group who don't know they are related.Amongst the yung ins anyway.The older folks will know what the title means.I think you would have it covered.Must ask Kingstonian.
