Yes, it is a case of 'If I had to explain you wouldn't understand' in a way. There are style details which differ from the classic Harrington - notably the patch pockets. Back in the day we had an eye for detail, and although a certain amount of face-ism (can't think of a better word offhand) was tolerable, something that different in style would, I believe, have been looked on as lacking in style. Also that kind of loud check wouldn't have appealed. To be honest I didn't like P-o-W check Harringtons at the time either.

The Harrington was always a very cool, very precise piece of kit. The plain colour, the pocket flaps, the collar, the rear yoke - all precisely styled.

Well put - 'neat and tidy' was the order of the day, IMHO.

Spurs were always fairly multi racial - there leader sammy Skyves ( or skyes ? ) was black and the Yid insult just that they did not have any jewish hooligans at all .

Yid Army is a recent (90s) term used by Spurs support generally and is the name of one of the Spurs firms since that time. Spurs UEFA cup win in 1972 against Feyenoord (Dutch side) kicked off and Spurs trashed the place (with one spurs fan getting shot dead by a local shopkeeper). 

 

This riot, seen live TV all over Europe is where the idea that Spurs exported football violence comes from. Spurs main mob in the skinhead era was (I think) led by Frankie Parrish and Sammy Skys who (I think) were skins at the time. There was no jewish mob. Dont think there ever has been at Spurs.

 

Author Hunter Davies wrote a great book 'the Glory Game' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glory-Game-British-Football-Mainstream/dp/1840182423) that followed the Spurs side of 1970-71 from inside the dreassing room - it's an amazing portrait of life in a first division football club at the turn of the '70s and would appeal to fans of most teams I think, annoyingly I cant find my copy right now but there's a chapter on supporters that has Spurs going up to Manchester or Liverpool with the team on the same train in 1st class. As Spurs steamed out onto the platform, Alan Gilzean ('Gilly' - a slaphead rather than a skinhead and a Spurs legend) leaned out of the window grinning and shouted 'Go on lads! Smash up the town!'.

 

Wouldn't happen these days.....

 

Edit: My typing this crossed over with FlyFronteds post - we both agree that there was no 'Jewish' mob, certainly not a 'Jewish skinhead mob' and that Sammy (who is still around) was a main person at spurs. The rest of his post.....well....

I'm ashamed to see that I am a Senior Member now.1.because I am a Yank and not a skinhead(I believe Skinheads are the Original Brits in the late 60's early 70's,and thats it.No one else.)and 2.I subscribe to Groucho Marx's old ditty"I wouldn't want to belong to a club(group)that would have me as a member." The plaid jacket I posted was the only vintage photo of this style of jacket I could find(it was popular in the Ivy League,preppys in the US early 60's).This example has not only seen much better days but is a poor  example asthetically.The pockets on the outside all wrong.The collar to large and pointy and the red lining is atrocious.The versions I had were a little different.I had one that had a Harrington cut.Square collar etc.The reason I posted it wasn't cause I thought yooz would like it(I was playin the fool)I was looking for criticism from yooz(which you eventually provided thanks)I was doing the same thing with the "Country Gents" (Eds words)Harrington.I knew you wouldn't like it.The important thing in Eds response was the comment that yooz was "Urban warriors" That leads me to my next question.   We know skinheads began in Inner city London.Was this always the case.Was it only city blokes involved?Were there Suburban crews or even rural crews as well?       Thanks for the comments about the Yids Army.I saw an interview with the head of the spurs crew.He said they hated bein called Yids(as you would expect)and adopted the word , much in the way African Americans apropriated the word Nigga(with an A.I would never and have never used that other deeply offensive word) I'm a man of peace.I am not a street fightin man.I'm a bohemian,dreamin,dreamin my days away.Are there any perks to bein a senior member?A special hat or large medallion possibly?TA

Spot on with that song mate, Sammy S is still around.. he was one of the leaders and a very tuff character. Chelsea have a long history of hatred towards Spurs, also Leeds.

When Abramovich sacked Jos'e Mourinho, The Chelsea fans was chanting we hate Tottenham..we hate Tottenham, Abramovich was reported as saying why are they chanting we hate Tottenham, But we are not playing Tottenham today.
