Mod to Suedehead - Page 628

Have been reading this for a while and thought i'd sign up and contribute a little if i can (not a skin - was once and admire some elements of the style). The issue of Norverners and jean jackets/patches comes up in this thread about Norvern skins and rare soul which might interest some: http://www.soul-source.co.uk/soulforum/topic/240448-early-skinheads-soul-rare-soul-68-72/

Another Guildford resident, I've had a few local cabbies tell me what it was like back in the day - and what acts came to town. And of course there's a clip of Max Romeo talking about Gfd skins wanting to kick someone in for racially abusing Maxie.

That picture of the denimed' Utd lads loitering outside the public lavs is a shocker - i've seen it elsewhere captioned 'cockney reds'. about right for that lot:-)

Levi Jacket with the label unpicked from the inside and re-sewn above the left breast pocket! Thought it was only those of us round my neck of the woods that did that, Mak, cos I remember talking to some lads fom York at Skeggy one Bank Holiday and they thought we were crazy defacing the jacket! Guess it was a way of showing off the brand, but we never really thought about it, it was just the done thing.

From the Soul-source thread.

This is interesting.I saw a Clip by another Reggae Artist that said Guildford was Racist-this was a load of B*ll*cks(in the 60s they were not anyway).

Browniecj,

think the Max Romeo thing was in BBC's Reggae Brittania, which has since been yanked off youtube for copyright infringemnet. Shame, it was a decent effort.

Jamaca Gleaner article about the song Wet Dream:

http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20090607/ent/ent6.html

Says the first time he performed it in England was in 'gilford'.

And yeah, cockney Reds.....why would you? :-)

not quite so relevant but there was a shop in Guildford for years called Harringtons (think Browniecj's mentioned it) which was owned by an old associate of John Simons (of the Ivy Shop fame). It changed it's name a few years back (to Hemingways) and relocated. It shut down for a re-fit recently and has re-opened as ....Village Gate.

'Old time something come back again'.

Don't think the stock is particularly Ivy - havent had a chance to have a look yet.

I bought a Baracuta out of there in the mid 80s, not a bad shop. Think i will pop down there to have a look at the new shop.

It's moved to 'White Lion Walk' shopping arcade opposite the Friary centre. As i say, haven't seen the stock yet so the only connection may be in the name....

As for the Cardigans there called "Connys" made in small run's in melbourne.

Yes my Man.I know about Sharpies I was asking about the lite brown overalls. You see it in the top pic which comes from an old film of Skins Suedes and their Rude boy buddy walkin round(London?)The Sharpies pic shows the overalls better(the only 2 photos i've seen of this style)They look like Dickies or Carhart of today.
