Mod to Suedehead - Page 372

Skinheads are British working class, unique to Britain/Ireland, its not all about Boots and Braces, its living the British working class way of life, only the British can understand that, Skinheads may have spread all over the world but its impossible for anyone outside the British Isles to really understand whats it all about.

This is no disrespect to anyone not from Britain or Ireland on here, You have your own interpretations of Skinheads.

But did you contribute when you first joined Spilla, You may have been a Skinhead for the last 25 years in Germany, but that means jack shit to British Skinheads.

Well said Roy.  My experience of skinheads when I've been in Germany (both military and civilian) and since I've lived in Sweden, is that all of them bascially came into it as punks, having adopted the skinhead punk uniform in about 1980 and listening only to oi! punk. I've never met a Swedish skinhead who came into it as a traditional that's because skinhead only came to Sweden in the early 80s with oi!

So let's back back to what this thread is about, traditional skinheads from the 60s and 70s in the UK.

Not about punks or American ska-punks, or skate-punks or HC-punks, or German or Swedish or any other nationality of latter day punk that has appropriated skinhead clobber.

he even agreed to my statement to 1000%!!!!!!!! maybe you should read it again...

You seem to be the one with the comprehension difficulties, this thread is about traditional skinheads not about American punks or bikers!

Since that pic is most likely after the height of skinhead, i wonder if those kids are from someplace else on holiday at Margate (like Scotland)? Sounds like most of you Londoners were already out of skinhead by 72, but the 60s look was still strong in other parts of UK where it was slower to catch on and lingered longer....?

I have said before.. people lurk on this thread and don't contribute, thats fair enough, But don't go on other sites slagging this thread off.
Ok some questions may seem trivial or even stupid, but they are relevant to the person asking them, and the great thing about this site.. someone will always give the benefit of the doubt and answer the best they can.

This is a very friendly thread and happy one, lets keep it that way, smile.gif

I have met people like that of course at gigs and festivals but they aren't and never have been skinheads, most of them are ex-punks or bikers and a large proportion are white supremecists and other variations of bonehead.

I recall a simillar discussion about this very issue a few pages back. So-called "skinheads" who dress hardcore scruffy, wear biker jackets and refer to themselves as "skinheads" aren't. They have no clue about skinheads. They are punk rockers with shaved heads.

I once was introduced to a punk rocker who sported a punk rock t shirt (I believe Black Flag) who claimed to be a skinhead at a party awhile back. By that time my hair had grown into a smooth style, with the characteristic part shaven on the side. I still wore the usual skinhead clobber. Ben Sherman bd, sta-prest and a pair of smart looking brogues. Anyway I was introduced to this guy by a mutual friend and the fellow introduced me as another skinhead. To which the punk rocker said, "Oh he's not a skinhead, his hair is not shaved and he's not wearing boots.

Well there you have it. IMHO, only a true skinhead would recognize another.

Obviously not all folk get into 'traditional skinhead', after moving on/evolving from punk and Oi.

Most skinheads I know have became 'trad skinhead' after moving on or progressing from  Mod and Soul, 2-tone, or even Britpop.

I'm probably the minority. I've never been able to listen to Oi and hardcore. Not for lack of trying mindbored.gif

Buzzcocks and Gang of Four are about as hardcore as I get :)

yes, that is the one thing about this site I think is unique, in that everyone maintains civility and a friendly attitude no matter how seemingly trivial or dumb questions may sound. I like to think of this forum as being informative without being intimidating since anyone reading and contributing to this thread has common ground in an interest in original skinhead style.

Honest question, why not those from Scotland?  Also, were there ever Skins in Wales during the early days?

Thanks
