Again great stuff about the music. This proves skins were more ecclectic in thier tastes than we recognize today.Interesting comment Lasttye about going to todays "Do's" and only hearing Jamaican sounds. One of these DJ's should expand thier playlist for you Lasttye. Parker thanks for the info on the twins,I suspected it was revival.Still a cool pic. Ivyskin89 Cool pic.I can tell by the minivan in the background this is very recent. Is that you or some of your mates?

There are Dos,that I go to,which have Soul and Reggae played-not the obvious stuff though. This is where I differ, with my Musical Tastes.I went right into Rocksteady then Reggae(from `66 onwards).Motown became Pop Music(the best time for me was around `65).Of the Albums that came out in the early 70s,"Whats Going On"(Motown had finally woken up) was more relevant about real Life than a lot of "Rock Stars" could portray.I felt the same about them as I did the "Concept"Albums in the 60s.:)

Unlike the Mods and later Punks, the Original Skinheads never had their own music, and seeing a Skinhead DJ was unheard off .and would have been a bit strange, :D

I know what you mean. You've kinda hit the nail on the head. Blokes like myself who were late mods / older skinheads still had a bit of the 'music culture' of the mods (that was a bit of cultural baggage I brought down from the North with me, and that's why I spent such a lot of time in the West Indian record shop in Deptford); but when the skinhead thing really took off the kids coming into it more or less accepted the music that was there - what I call the 'dancehall reggae' - and didn't become enthusiastic record collectors or anything like that.

The DJ at the Savoy Rooms in Catford, Steve Maxted, wasn't even close to being a skinhead. Good DJ, though. He played what the customers wanted to hear, and that was that. Lot's of 'dancehall reggae' (what people call 'skinhead reggae' these days, but we never really called it anything at the time except reggae) and Motown, and eventually things like Norman Greenbaum.

You mentioned T-Rex. I went to see them at Lewisham Odeon in 1971, with a whole bunch of ex-skinhead mates. You're right again - the popularity of bands like T-Rex signalled the end of the skinhead era, in London at any rate.

I think you and I are just about the same generation, Col.

The places I went to in 66, 67 played very little apart from Stax/Atlantic/Motown, with some Rocksteady. I used to scour the second-hand record stalls in markets looking for ska and rocksteady 45s.

That Marvin Gaye album - What's Going On - was superb.
