Day off today cant get any work, and yes i to feel like i've been sold down the river.
Colin, Dad would often scoff at what later teds wore mainly there colour choices, powder blues and pinks etc, he would remark that in his day it was mainly dark blues, browns, greys etc, he used to get his suits tailor made, and would pay on the tick in the booth, ive spoken to him quite a bit about tailoring etc and he knows his stuff, he has also mentioned that whist the stereotype for teds was drapes/crushers etc, it evolved and changed.

I went thru all the family pics a while back with my olds, a brilliant couple of hours listening to there yarns, Mother recounting tales of girls getting masscara eye ( an infection ) apparantly the stuff came in a solid block with a brush, you were meant to wet it with water to apply it, but no one bothered with that whilst out on the town and used spit, yuk! perfume came in a cardboard box and had to be put in an atomizer.

Spot on, on the brown splits Ace's, a bottle of brown ale with bitter in the same glass, the father in law always drunk a light split, the same as i've mentioned but with light ale, another i've heard of is black and tan, stout and bitter?
Anyhow's ive rambled on and dont want to move the thread to far off topic, but this is what you can end up looking like when you've drunk to many splits that are spiked with whiskey.

http://www.edwardianteddyboy.com/page2.htm amazing blog on Teds that made me revaluate my opinion on people who i hated in the mid 70s due to there attacks on Soul boys . The pics are stunning .

That is an amazing blog. Fantastic photos and text. Looks like the Teds were way ahead of us. I thought we owed our heritage to the mods. I have had to re-evaluate as well. That last photo was next door to your manor wasn't it flyfronted? They could have been us.

The Teddy Boy Story is good reading. The Picture of three Teds standing about,in the Old Kent Road, looks interesting. The one on the right could be Bob(who I have written about-re Clothes in the Wardrobe). He was short, dark(was half Italian)and like I said very smart. He once told me a Story when The Elephant and Brixton Mobs took on the Fairground Boys on Clapham Common.Evidently it was quite a Battle. If I remember correctly the Teds won

.Well done again Bassett, good bit of "Social History".This is what I like reading about.:)

flyfronted. Thanks for the Teddy Boy link.Lots of interesting facts.2 things I found particularly interensting.Teddy Boys came before the advent of Rock and Roll and The Teds fighting in Brighton on Holidays. This last fact illustrates (I think) that not much changed from the Teds to the Mods to the Skins.I wonder if this Seaside Holiday violence continues today?

Basset - Lovely photos mate, thank you for sharing them.

Flyfronted - That Teddy Boy link mentioned The Cosh Boys, that's the spivvy lot that I read about somewhere. Brilliant reading, thanks.

Anyone have any info. on 'Blitz kids' (another moral panic) ? The 1940s variety, not the New Romantics :D

'Cosh Boy' is the title of a great little film starring a very young Joan Collins (and looking very lovely too). Think it was her first or second film.

Was moving flat about 110 years ago and this came on in the afternoon. Didnt get anything done for the duration.

A few great pics posted by Ballroom Blitz today:
Edgware 1968
Good photos.

This one shows a clear shot of how the original shirt collars had that distinctive 'roll'.

I remember wearing the old 'Smokey Joe' cardigans - warm clothing for when we were loitering on street corners etc

Anyone originals on here remember bleached denim vests? In the movie Blow Up, during the yard birds scene, there is a mod wearing a white ben sherman and a bleached denim vest. Check it out at 1:25

Very Smart Lads...This is how i remember NW London Skinheads, These lads coming from Edgware may have been part of the Burnt oak Mob, Burnt Oak had a massive Council Estate..so they had plenty of numbers, Many families moved out during the slum clearance from Highbury, Islington , Somers Town, Tottenham, and other places from Central NW and N London,
Got to say the Burnt Oak Mob was smart Lads..and had a lot of influence over other Mobs ..including ours.:)

loampiavreter, great find. The 68 photo especially cool(color). I've had a question rollin round my brain for some time.I've noticed what seems to be an anomaly.I suspect Lasttye is the one to answer as he knows the folks involved. In "Man Alive what's the truth about skinheads"(we've all seen it)Steve Thompson figures prominantly. He's in the youth club playin pinball.Later we see him leaving work with his fellow skin. Then in the barbers chair. And he is interviewed in his front room with his folks. We also see Steve in alot of photos as well.He is in the photo of Danny Eccles and his mob in the street under a Chelsea banner.Lasttye has said Danny and his crew was from Tottenham (NW London right?)And yet Steve Thompson when he's in his front room says he's from the East End.How is it that a skin from the East End ends up in a NW crew? Anyone got any answers?
