Processed By eBay with ImageMagick, R1.1.1.M2a

Black longwings by Next that I spotted on ebay. Leather soles and leather lined. Made in Ireland. I don't really know anything about the quality of Next, or Irish-made hoofs.

'The Smithies' or 'The Smiffies' were a small group of young lads from Deptford, S London. They got their name because the family name of two or three of them was 'Smith' (brothers, or cousins), and that name stuck to the whole bunch. They got pocket money by collecting and selling scrap (yes, they were proper 'totters'). I met the bloke on the extreme left of the photo a couple of times. I remember he came to my college in New Cross for an open-air concert.

I had a pair of Smooth Gibsons(from Next),they came out about the same time. They wore ok and I had no problems with them.In those days I had an Account with them, their stuff was pretty good-cannot say the same now though.

I thought that Next had Loakes Shoes-or on occasions.

Yes,although some have been on here before seeing them altogether you can see how fashions changed in those few years.

I liked the one with the A2 jackets...the 2 blokes who look like they are wearing trainers and the bloke with the white tie ( pity its a BW photo as I would bet that's a red shirt ).

They're new deadstock, but I don't know how old they are. They're definitely not from their current line. There's only one pair of longwings in their brogue section, and they're textured leather with a contrasting beige sole/heel.

I bought my "Smooths" from Next-late 80s/early 90s.They had the Longwings as well then then.Since 2005(when I returned from Cyprus,I saw they were stocking Loakes Shoes).

I've just been working my way through both series of Budgie on youtube. Haven't seen Budgie since they repeated it on Ch4 back in the mid-80s. The interior shots are obviously wobbly sets, but it was good to see some location stuff with plenty of grimy London and grimy Londoners in the background. I'd never realised how much Minder had ripped the whole 'lovable loser/dodgy villain' dynamic from Budgie. Coincidently, they were both produced by Verity Lambert.

Charlie Endell would've eaten Arthur Daley and Del Boy for breakfast, shat them out at lunchtime, and got Budgie to clear up the mess.He was 20 times better dressed to boot. It was good to see Johnny Shannon pop up as well. He is my favourite cockney villain/bent copper actor through the 60s/70s/80s. Very believable.

One thing I have noticed though; Wolfie Smith, Terry McCann and Ronald 'Budgie' Bird were all loyal Fulham fans. It seems being a Fulham supporter in the 1970s was TV shorthand for being a lovable loser.

I bought a pair of "Bench Made" brogues from Next many years ago. Within 3 months I had to have them re-soled. When I took them to the cobbler, he played heck about the poor quality of them, saying they shouldn't have needed repairing in such a short space of time. I wrote a letter of complaint to Next but didn't even get a reply. Needless to say, I've never bought a pair of shoes from there since.
