I've got them Aldens. Even more amazing in the flesh.   Unreasonable markup outside the US though!!!  Glad I live about forty miles from the factory, quite a bit cheaper locally.

I'm Tom, born in London in 1961. Remember quite a bit of the end of the 60s/early 70s, especially as my aunts, uncles and cousins were mods and skinheads - mainly dependent on their age... then into the 70s, got involved in punk in early 76, became a skinhead briefly in 77 and then quickly a suedehead up until around 83/84 and then a casual.

Cheers

Tom

Welcome Tom good to see you on SF.
Kind Regards

I am also interested in how much you paid in US dollars. The usual rule for buying USA made products in the UK seems to be the US dollar price becomes the UK pound price. Always a bit of a rip off. Made in USA still has some kudos with me.  I love the shoes but can't justify to my missus buying them at the UK price.

Anyone got any info/opinions about Stuart McGuire Brogues? Just saw this pic and like the look of them.
Opinions/experience of, greatly appreciated.

Good looking shoe. May be not in the same league as the Aldens. Are they made in USA? I know some are made in Mexico. Can sometimes find these on ebay going quite cheap but these are new? At a reasonable price I would be tempted to buy them.

Is your son still in the scene?

I was in the Alden shop on Maddison Avenue (NYC) and they were 600 dollars (almost 2 years ago). They were on sale in a shop in Wall Street for 550 but they were shut. Still not cheap but a big drop from 600 quid.

Didn't get the long wings (they were lovely but not that much better than me late 60s shell Florsheims) but treated mesell to a pair of beef-roll pennies instead. Comfiest loafers I've ever had.

I paid around $500 USD about three or four years ago from North River Outfitters in Boston.  That was my only big-ticket purchase for some time.  I noticed they're $665 on their website now!!!  Ridiculous how quickly prices go up when the dollar ain't worth the paper it's printed on...

I have to say though, their long wings are dynamite. Currently wearing a pair of Alden black calfskin longwings with a subtle commando sole. Nice for the winters here.

Their factory is in Middleborough, MA.  I mentioned it above as I assume their proximity to Beantown keeps(or kept?) their prices attainable here.

I don't know if they have a factory outlet shop or anything as their stock seems to fly off the shelves.

Buttons, that must be the same Alden shop in NYC I went into this past fall.  the wife and I mooched in... She saw the prices and out we went, hahaha.

The longwings are a thing of beauty but as ye say very dear.
While I was trying on the loafers, had a good chat with the bloke and it was well worth going in just for that (well, and getting a pair of loafers that actually fit properly for a change).
He had nothing but bad words to say about Allen Edmonds and Florsheim for their far eastern shift and drop off in quality. An entertaining shoe rant.

Was in the Alden shop in San Fransisco last year and did the same as you, Botolph.

It's nice to hear of somebody in retail who's that passionate about the gear.  About Allen Edmonds, maybe they was old stock, but I bought a pair of black AE longwings in Hamilton Ontario last year and they were most certainly made in the US.  Very nice brogues, double oak sole, etc, and maybe 3/5 the price of Alden.

So have AE gone fully Far East?  Too bad if so. Weren't they once known as the Great American Shoe Company?

So what loafers didja pick up in SF?  Almost picked up a pair of Alden loafers yesterday in Kansas City but passed. I dig beefroll/Cape Cod style loafers but tried out a pair of straight up penny loafers and they looked a bit "professorial" and defo not very "skinhead" or even very cool on me...
