By far, this is the best thread on here.

MoM, thank you for confirming my oft-dismissed assertion (at least among my peers) that the skinheads of 68/69 did not uniformly listen to ska and reggae. I can't tell you how many arguments I've had about that and it's nice to have some primary confirmation on the topic.

By any chance do you(or any1) have any experience with Merc's button down shirts like this one?: http://www.drstrange.com/punk-rock-c...-p1361632.html How's the quality? They also sell Merc Harringtons for $80(just thought I'd add that).

^^ last time I bought a Merc buttondown was almost 10 years ago, so not sure of what today's shirts are like. That said, $54 isnt a bad price if it fits ok. I seem to recall it being "average", slightly under par with Ben Sherman in terms of cloth and overall quality. For another $25, I'd rather get one of the shirts from Jump the Gun which are about $75 shipped from UK, much better shirts, all the right details, made in UK etc.

Jason, what's your experience with the Britac shirts? I like alot of the patterns but then hear horror stories about the quality, specifically buttons falling off. Also, if you know, what's the fabric itself like?

Britac....I only own one so my opinion is just based on that one shirt, they might have differing qualities of cloth (like DNA Groove uses shirting cloths that are slightly different from each other, but all high quality) the fit is a bit weird, it's a slim fit thru the chest and shoulders, but the torso is kind of big in proportion. (good for skinny guy with beer gut?) I got a size med and had the shirt body taken in, and I'd say the chest measures on the smaller side of Med. The fabric itself isnt the greatest, a bit hard feeling. They do have great choice in checks and colors tho, probably the best of any brand out there. It was def worth a punt back when the Euro dropped a lot against the dollar (earlier this year) and I think I got my shirt for about $65 shipped or something like that. For the money I'd buy JtG for normal daily shirts, and pay a bit more for DNA Groove for a nicer more refined shirt with better materials and finish. as far as buttons falling off, mine havent, but then I have shirts that brag about buttons being "handsewn in the USA" that have repeatedly fallen off, one particular shirt had 2 buttons fall off after 1 wear, on its first wash. If that's what "handsewn in the USA" gets you, I think I prefer machine sewn in China.

Agreed! They have THE best patterns. This really cool Scooterist/Soul Night DJ told me about them, don't have one yet but might buy one for myself for Christmas

Anyone aware of any soul/ska/reggae clubs or events in the NYC area?

Based on the discussions in this thread, I feel like there still must be some interest still around for the style and music.

^^ the only regular 'do I know of in NYC is subway soul, takes place 3rd friday of each month. Seems like there are more events in Williamsburg/Brooklyn than Manhattan.

Lemme ask a buddy who lives in Brooklyn. He doesn't get out much himself (he's a night-time EMT for FDNY) but he knows things.

Thanks, it looks like that site has a ton of good info. TBH, I'd rather head to a club in Brooklyn. Manhattan is a bit much.

Yeah, it seems like most people who used to be involved in this scene have seemed to grow out of the night-life aspect. I don't really get out much, but the wife has been asking to go dancing...

I have a friend, a skinhead girl turned mod, who has lived out in Brooklyn for many years now, and she says that when friends come out to visit from west coast she's reluctant to take them to local soul nites because, in her opinion, the music is way below west coast standards, which is funny because when I come back from London and going to a 'do there, I think the same about our clubs, how the english clubs play way better music. I think a lot of that too, is US DJs are so preoccupied with "rare" records that oftentimes they play stuff that is rare but not any good.

He suggests the following:

Keep hitting up Dolanite Presents for the dos they put on, which are once or twice a month.

Otto's Shrunken Head in Manhattan (538 E. 14th St) has a weekly reggae/ska/soul night on Thursdays hosted by DJ Agent Jay (of the Slackers fame). They also have other stuff here and there, check out their calendar

I'll let you know if I think of more.
