I think I was doing a search on well made suits and came across the forum. After lurking a bit and discovering B&S I registered and have been giving my wallet a good beating ever since!

As with most large internet ventures, a .com/.net has an international feel to it rather than an exclusively American one. The Americans also seem to me to have the biggest knowledge/opinion when it comes to luxury clothes and most other things. Just look at furniture in Australia. Most top quality furniture made for the Australian market is very simple and plain and does the job it was designed for. I'm not talking about the minimalist furniture here either, more the type that is made out of our pine and jarrah. Top American furniture comes with style and image as well as quality, and these styles mightn't be appealing to some, but there is such variety out there that there is no need to take what you can get. Yes there is the odd nice piece in Australia. Rarely do you ever come across a wide-branded style of furniture that you can deck your whole house out in uniformly. The only real chance of that is Ikea, but that is hardly quality or Australian. Taking what you can get seems to be the consumer way in Australia, whereas in other countries, the the customer gets what he wants. /rant

I was just finishing uni back in 07 and looking for some smart shoes for work.
Did a search and came across this forum, haven't looked back.

I have come a long way from those AE Park Avenues though! God i wish my taste remained that affordable!

In my case I'd been searching for some specific info on black tie at some point and came across StyleForum threads. From there happened to discover the Oz members thread and the relative sanity therein!

Interesting... simlarly I've had an appreciation for good English shoes ever since I can remember, and I noticed a lot of related search content from this site...

I was surprised to find a community of people interested in the same quality shoes I was; surprising because I'd met precisely no one in Oz who had ever heard of Loake or Crockett & Jones etc. (plus good quality stuff in general is so hard to find and is prohibitively expensive here, as jobro was alluding to).

After a few years on and off the site it's opened me up to a whole range of new makers, vendors and styles... it hasn't essentially changed my style, but it's certainly given me a broader vocab to express it (as well as simultaneously saving and costing me sums of money).

While I'm sure SF has jumped the shark a little for some of the older members, I think it still holds a lot of interest for our sartorially adolescent country.

I thought I was condemned to walk the earth forever in RM Williams boots, not that there is anything wrong with that. But about a year ago I discovered Herrings shoes via SF and the other mens site and have picked up a nice couple of pairs of Oxfords and Longwings by Church. I would love to get some AE but the sizing of US shoes is a mystery to me and that is even when I have used a Brannock Device. And also Sydney is just **** these days for mens wear. Melbourne, aside from where it is, has it all over Sydney in terms of fashion and style choices.

Thanks for the info. Wow $200 is insane for such an alteration, I don't care if he was going to sew it with his feet! That money could nearly buy me 3.5m of Holland and Sherry fabric that I'm looking at for my new 2 piece suit. Maybe it's his way of saying "I don't like doing that alteration". Anyway see how it goes tomorrow. My sleeves come with unfinished buttonholes, so hoping it won't cost that much to "finish" them. I will post prices and the alterations I have done tomorrow (if I go through with it at all).

Good content and some good blokes on here who give good advice - but yea, SF has been the cause of my considerably larger clothes budget compared to pre-SF days. I also blame it for my obsession/fetish with quality dress shoes.

Literally laughing out loud. "Nope there are no pictures of hot/bikini-clad ladies, just guys in suits. What? Yes lots of posters are straight as far as I know"

I was thinking about buying a Stowa watch and google brought up a thread on here. Delighted to find a place where similarly afflicted folk hung out. After all, this is stuff that many of us will find difficult to discuss with friends and family: imagine the shame if they knew what we got up to!

i had an intrest for good colthes and what made them good, English Cut furthered my undersnatnding and from there i found styleforum after searching 'bespoke' i guess.
unfortunatily the intrest grew into an expensive shoe intrest too :S

adrian has done some alterations for me in the past on an overcoat, the results were fantastic, $90 for re doing the back and sides, which i dont feel is to bad at all.

It's certainly possible, and I've had it done myself.

Have a careful talk to the person doing the alterations, though, as you want to be sure that they actually know what they are doing and that you won't end up being worse off!

My wife knows, and I suffer the shame on a regular basis.
