I am young and wear a tie as a sign of respect considering the meetings I attend involve the people paying my bills.

The only difference will be that I will be wearing a tie when not at meetings.

And yes, Windsor Smith shoes are all the rage... just look at the white loafers with black heels that don't deserve to be on the Gold Coast let alone in cities.

I work in a mid-tier law firm in Sydney, and most of the lawyers (partner's included) don't wear ties in the office. I just keep a few ties in the office for when I go to meetings or court. Having said that I did wear a tie for about a month before I relaxed my attire.

You wouldn't happen to have any strong connections at St Andrews (USyd)?

BTW, read about your PJ suit; best of luck mate

I don't go looking for flannelette - you can get flannelette sheets but that possible not the strong tartan look you are after.

I'd start at Spotlight stores and ask them where you might get it. If you are in Melb you could try the run down looking warehouse full of material near American Tailors. Its worth going in just for the experience - don't go in alone though.

Thanks, i'll check these out soon.

I'm all for wearing ties and everything, and I'm 20. Ties aren't just made to impress clients and all.

...it's also to impress the single ladies in offizzay.

Was up the top end of Bourke St this afternoon picking up some alterations from Katerina's and popped into American Tailors to see the sale. Had a great chat with the old sales assistance and tried on a pair of C&J's. He mentioned that they can do custom orders from the UK for customers and will quote prices in GBP (and charge in AUD based on a rate of 0.6).

Elvish, not all of us ended up at a mid-tier law firm!

I also work in a law firm - in Melbourne. Probably more than half the professional staff wear ties, although plenty don't, including partners. A few years ago I worked at a large national firm when they changed their dress policy to 'business appropriate', or some such jargon. What it meant was that there was no need to wear a suit unless the circumstances dictated - i.e. you were meeting a client or attending Court. Apart from the generally deplorable state of men's business casual attire, it created problems when people (myself included on one occasion) forgot that they required a suit, and had to duck home to get changed! I came to realisation that it was far easier to wear a suit every day - I also happen to think that a suit (including a tie) is more appropriate attire for a professional working environment.

That is good to hear! I work in property development so I'd rather not be hanging around lawyer's all day, no offense to anyone out there.

I am actually still studying and have had to transfer because of the move. I was hoping to reside in the college but it is all booked. Sem2 is an option but the waiting list is very long so ...

No - I really want and would have bought a black cap toe oxford but they only had size 8.5 (I am a 10.5-11). I did pop into the Herringbone sale this morning - again didn't pick up anything - almost bought a v-neck jumper thinking it was $100 but when the SA rang it up it turned out to be a $177 cashmere - so I put it back.

Plenty of stock this morning - with the suit racks full with a good variety of sizes. If I was in the market for a new RTW suit I would have for sure picked up a suit or two. Plenty of shirts and ties as usual. No mens belts from what I could tell though.

When I got into the office today I was telling a colleague about the jumper and we got on the topic of cashmere v merino wool. The conculsion that we came to was that the small difference between merino and cashmere did not justify the huge step up in price. I think that we are just lucky in Australia that we have such ready access to merino wool. I would be interested to hear what other people's opinions are on the topic.
