I will check out Herringbone and the antique store today and report back. Are you after three or four studs?

I may have a set at home that I could be convinced to part with ... will have a look and let you know.

Fortunately I had my shirt made for both button and stud use, and I've been preferring the straight up button look as of late.

I went to Herringbone, they have 2 tux shirts (bib or pleat)with plastic buttons for $250 (not wing tip)

Antique store had 2 sets of studs but they were $450. A set of Onyx $100 studs online should suffice instead.

Parker & Co - I didnt have the balls to go in.

I think i will get the shirt first so i know exactly how many studs i need.

Thanks

From what my colleague tells me this guy has a number of tailors in different parts of Asia making stuff for him. He said to email him and send him a picture of what you want and he'll send it to his tailors and get the one who will do the best job to make it for you.

He buys all his suits and shirts from this site ands for what I've seen the quality looks OK (i'm no authority on clothing though) and my workmate, who only wears tailor made suits, says they're great

His last suit from this guy was made in Hong Kong but apparently the one he has that I really like was made by a tailor in India. It's a nice looking suit and he apparently only paid just under $600 for it.

The guy's based in Sydney too. I've often thought about getting a suit from one of these on-line Asian tailors as they look good for the money but I've always worried about where I'd stand if I had any problems. Dealing with a local guy makes a difference.

I suggest you also try Retro Cufflinks - the link for which I posted previously.

Yeah, I have seen some nice sets in a Fremantle opshop window. This is Perth we are talking about tho - the anti-fashion/style capital of the world where good quality items are rarly purchased retail. Not many items of quality make it through to the opshops.

fxh - in regard to your pondering the ADF clothing I think that there are a few factors behind the way that 'we' (I don't seem to be able to let the military go just yet) dress.
I think that the first and foremost reason would be the function of the clothing itself. I can say from personal experience that wearing the camouflage clothing was always my preferred option as it was just so damn comfortable. Seriously it was like going to work in a pair of pyjamas. The more you wore and washed them the softer they got. Of course after about 2 weeks in the same pair of clothes and no shower the experience was a little bit different but for day to day use they were wonderful. Also there are actually quite a few variants of the same basic template for the clothes, e.g. the tank drivers would have double epaulets (sp?) so that if someone had to yank them out of the top of a tank for some reason it would be easier and the shirt jacket wouldn't rip. Pilots and aircrew also had their own special clothes.

Also in recent times, something like the last 6 months or so, there has been a decision made by the people in charge of clothing, i.e. some General somewhere in Canberra, to move toward only wearing the more tailored stuff on special occasions, for specific duties or if working in certain locations / units. From what I have been told this is purely a financial decision as it is much cheaper for the ADF to get camouflage clothing that everyone likes and wears than to require everyone to wear the more formal dress on a daily basis. In addition to this the camouflage clothing is much more hard wearing than the more formal stuff. Seriously, just one ANZAC Day can absolutely ruin a formal shirt and trousers (personal experience again) whereas the camouflage stuff can take years of being beaten up. We also had to buy our formal clothes after the initial issue but not our camouflage stuff so that might also be a reason for people wearing it more often.

Finally, one size does not fit all, especially with the formal stuff. I had to constantly buy shirts that were too big as my neck size of about 17.5 inches equated to an extra large shirt but the rest of me actually was more of a medium to large. One size seems to fit most with the camouflage stuff.

I hope that sort of makes sense and goes some way to helping you with your pondering. Military clothing can be a minefield (no pun intended) and even though it seems simple on the surface those that wear it every day know that just one small mistake can have someone come down on you like a tonne of bricks...and then you find yourself painting rocks for a week.

If a Canberra SF get together were to be on the cards I would be delighted to join in. The Wig and Pen has some nice beers and it would be good to meet some of the other members.

Thanks for that. I was looking at that new VC in the Telegraph shots and his formal jacket looked like it was the US "sack" style and lacked any tapering or "supression" as the iGents say. There was none of the US or Italian style cut to the body look. Admittedly Cpl Roberts-Smith VC is a massive unit but I wondered if that is a deliberate look/cut?
