know any good cobblers around the city? i need some shoes re-soled. see plenty around places like picadilly, trinity arcade etc.

I need a new suit, I'm considering either going with p Johnson or paying Gordon Yao a visit on his Aussie tour.

I'd prefer to go with p Johnson as he seems to have a good eye, and the service offered is v similar to that (and probably better) than a visiting Yao.

But what's with the photos on Johnson's tumblr site? Most have some crazy weird waist suppression. Also, can be do a stiffer shoulder? I'm not sure I'm a fan of the soft. And does he have any heavier fabrics?

 

The styling is pretty aggressive, admittedly but I'm pretty sure that can be left up to you and your preference/discretion. From what I have seen on friends who have commissioned Patrick, and from the information on his website, you can have virtually any shoulder you wish -- and yes, he stocks heavier fabrics. (Worsted wools etc). It might be good to ask some questions via email.

None of the shoulder options from P Johnson are particularly soft. If you're new to the MTM game, I'd go with P Johnson, if the pricing structure suits your budget. There are plenty of heavier fabrics available.

I noticed that as well however keep in mind that the photo's on the blog are of clients jackets, not jackets made to fit the mannequin they are on. P Johnson having the demographic he does tends to attract a fairly slim clientele I'd assume, hence the tightness on some of the jackets.

Theres a few blogs around that are Honkers people ranting about mainlanders and showing phone videos of train incidents etc. They have arced upa bit after the mainlander Professor Kong Qingdong of Peking University called Hong Kong people dogs etc

I understand the anger and resentment from both sides of the water. However there just appears to be so many commenters on that site who are just there to troll and cause offence and seem as though most of them are really just ignorant 14 year old brats.

Speaking of Chinese. There is a specific, very easily identifiable sub group that I absolutely hate and want to punch them in the face every time I see them. They are always in a group of 5 or so, middle aged, cheap loafer wearing, male, portly, loud, obnoxious, absolutely lacking in manners, mainland Chinese tourists who think they are top shit and most likely are some low level party officials. On planes they always ignore safety instructions and think rules don't apply to them. Fuck them.

i think its more about a perception of what the customer wants. the typical australian male believes a slim fitting suit is a well fitted suit. this is not the case. the clothes used in their promo shots dont fit well. thats not to say they cant make something that does fit well. just make your preference for a more relaxed waist and a lower button point (because theyre all ridiculously high) clearly known.

In Taiwan you often get an earful of people going on about Mainlanders and Mainland Gangsters!

As a piece of general advice, don't feel your options are limited by the preferences of the majority on this forum. You should, ideally, seek out a MTM tailor/brand with a style you desire and which suits your body shape, rather than try and fit yourself into a certain shape that is "in".

As for the tailors in question, some of their clients haunt these boards so I would consider their input as to tailors' capacity and willingness to deviate from their 'house style'.
