my top 3 shoes would be

1) Cap toe oxford in black

2) Semi brogue in black

3) Dark brown to snuff brown suede captoe/semi brogue on rubber sole

Given im a Sydney sider and im conservative business dress Id opt for two black shoes to alternate between and the dark brown suede for cooler/wetter months
When your collection expands you'll end up having a few more brown pairs as there are many shades/textures/leather types to pick from.
My actual shoe lineup at the moment is
3 black shoes. Plain captoe, semi brogue adelaide, wholecut, 2 leather, 1 dainite
Mid brown suede oxford semi brogue - dainite
dark brown suede plain cap toe - dainite
dark brown semi brogue adelaide - leather
3 x suede driving shoes - blue/grey, tan, chocolate - looking to add a calf leather in the mix
black chelsea boot
Im now looking for a NST derby in a brown, a dressier loafer and a replacement dark brown suede for the mix.
I also want the Alden snuff suede chukka to wear with my new 3sixteens

Nice.
I sometimes think I could live with a black punch captoe (adelaide type) and a dark brown one and a bunch of slightly different shades of brown suede chukkas.

I've only got two Dainite soles but I find them more treacherous - particularly on slippery timber deck, - and hard underfoot - than leather.

How do you find them?

Mine aren't worn down much, and I suspect that contributes, but I've actually slipped arse over tit on a few wet wooden decks.

They feel very very hard to wear underfoot.

I think they are a northern hemisphere snow/wet weather shoe.

What are favourites for messenger bags?
I'm looking to spend up to probably $600 max.

Have seen some nice ones from Coach....Mr Porter had a nice Mulberry one but a little out of my $$ bracket.

It's for work; attire - suit.

Cheers for any recommendations!

Agreed that a messenger bag + suit is confusing. I'll also add that while I love messenger bags, I find them pretty impractical, really. I'm considering moving back to a backpack - big enough for my stuff, but doesn't cause my shoulders/back to become sore.

Sigh.
Ok, my mistake.
I don't want a backpack though. I'm not a fan.

I guess I'll keep looking for something more along the lines of a briefcase type bag.

I'd say you just need three pairs:

  • formal in black (captoe or plain toe oxford)
  • semi-formal in dark brown (wingtip/longwing derby)
  • casual in dark brown (suede chukka)

I reckon that will get you through most situations.

Single/double monks, wholecuts, wingtip boots, shell, scotchgrain etc. can come later if you want.

Interesting - you've basically quoted my shoe purchases to date (although not in order)... I guess I represent a case of Styleforum osmosis!

I have a semi-brouge in burnished calf, a black toe cap oxford and some chocolate brown suede chukkas. The chukkas get the most wear as they work with denim as well as chinos and trousers, whereas the oxfords are only worn with chinos (occasionally) and suit trousers.

I must admit to a pair of RM Craftsmans (in black) as well which work great with denim and polo, etc

I've always liked the idea of a single or double monk, but never bought myself to pull the trigger on a pair. But, I guess I have a slightly conservative nature which I like to think I'll overcome someday soon...

Are these the meerkats with the heel problem?

yep. and its the same shoe as well

Does the sole appear to have split open? I suppose that it's possible that water could penetrate into the sole through that split (if that is what it is) and that the shoe could be damaged as a consequence.

I'd be inclined to take them in to Joe's Shoe Repairs at Coorparoo if you are able to do so.

Failing that, take them in to Hallelujah at the bottom of Broadway on the Mall and ask them to have a look at them. I'd definitely recommend Joe's Shoe Repairs over Hallelujah, but Hallelujah are nonetheless much better than your regular, kiosk-style shoe re-soling places.

thanks for the suggestion
