Question: Is this normal or should I go elsewhere?

In my lunch break today I went to the alterations place around the corner, hoping to get some minor alterations done to a few shirts. They all fit nicely on the shoulders, but I'm tall and thin so I was hoping to get them taken in a little around the waist, and maybe have the sleeves adjusted so they don't look so billowy over my chicken arms. Again, they all fit passably well, but I was hoping to have them altered to fit me perfectly.

I've never had clothes altered before, but from reading online I didn't think any of these requests would pose a problem. But I was essentially told that none of my shirts could be altered because it will affect the shape of the shirt (I kind of thought that was the point of alteration, but didn't want to say anything). Specifically, the sleeves couldn't be brought in without making the arm hole smaller and higher, therefore making it impossible to move my arms.

Is this true, or should I take them somewhere else? (If so, where would you recommend?) Is it possible that the specific shirts I brought in wouldn't take well to alteration?

I also had a pair of pants that she said she couldn't make less baggy without closing half of the pocket, which confused me but by that point I was ready to leave.

whereabouts are you based?

Have you guys purchased suits/jackets from suit supply? Do most of the fits seem to have quite a high buttoning point or is that just me?

I'm not a tailor, but I suspect that if you wanted to have the sleeves narrowed and if that included the actual armholes/sleevehead at the top of the sleeve, that could be quite complex as it would, in effect, shorten the shirt a bit as well as pulling in both the chest and the back. So, I can understand why the alterations person might have been reluctant to handle that sort of alteration.

I suppose that it would be possible to leave the armhole/sleevehead alone and to start slimming the arms below that, so it could well be worth approaching another tailor for a second opinion.

Taking in the side hems below the sleeves is, I believe, a pretty simple alteration and is a better way of slimming a shirt than putting darts in the back, as darts can both throw off the balance of the shirt between the front and the back, and they also look bad (in my humble opinion!).

With regard to the trousers and "closing half the pocket", I suppose that it depends how much you wanted to have them taken in. Taking in too much of the rear seam at the back of a pair of trousers risks throwing off the balance of the pockets so I suppose that if you wanted them taken in a lot it could be problematic. Again, however, it sounds as though you should definitely seek a second opinion from a reputable alterations tailor.

With the kind of pins I have, they better off in trousers. Physical activity, hmmm, I recall doing some in 1996. Only joking. Hate shorts personally, and the sports I play dont require shorts; snooker, softball and mountaineering/treking, all trouser sports - no shorts required.

The one Rob linked a couple of pages back does seem to have a high stance. However, it is a sports coat. This means it is going to be a little shorter in length (1 maybe 2 inches) than a typical suit jacket, and the button position will change relative to the change in size; it will be a little higher.

You can clearly see what I mean about a shorter jacket length and hence, a higher button stance as a result. If you are wearing it casually, it will look schmick, for sure.
