How does one sport the difference between hand-sewn and machine-sewn button holes?
Is one necessarily better than the other? After all, its still a tailor sitting in front a fabric guiding it by hand..they are just using a machine to perform the stitching.
The link that appolyon provided shows a few good examples. Short of actually looking at pictures such as those in the link and at actual examples, it's rather difficult to explain the differences. Simply put, hand-sewn buttonholes have a more "natural" look (not surprisingly!) and are usually a bit assymetrical and perhaps even slightly crooked. There's usually very slight variation between the stitches - both spacing and perhaps length. Some might object to those slight imperfections, whereas others will believe that they enhance the experience.
For my money, Brioni makes really lovely hand-stitched buttonholes on their jackets. Borrelli does nice ones, but for some reason, I prefer the shape of Brioni's buttonholes.
