Is one necessarily better than the other? After all, its still a tailor sitting in front a fabric guiding it by hand..they are just using a machine to perform the stitching.

The link that appolyon provided shows a few good examples. Short of actually looking at pictures such as those in the link and at actual examples, it's rather difficult to explain the differences. Simply put, hand-sewn buttonholes have a more "natural" look (not surprisingly!) and are usually a bit assymetrical and perhaps even slightly crooked. There's usually very slight variation between the stitches - both spacing and perhaps length. Some might object to those slight imperfections, whereas others will believe that they enhance the experience.

For my money, Brioni makes really lovely hand-stitched buttonholes on their jackets. Borrelli does nice ones, but for some reason, I prefer the shape of Brioni's buttonholes.

Last time I visited a reputable tailor (retired as a tailor, doing alteration only now) and was quoted with $75 per button (totally handstitches yet bringing the total to $600 for button hole only! $75 per button hole is lunacy. To get him to open up 8 buttonholes, for few more you can buy a WWChan suit, which would have a surgeon's cuff. P.s. anything up for Boxing day sales?

Hi peeps,

Anyone down in Melbourne have any news if American Tailors are planning to have a C&J sale again?

Might actually take a flight down from Syd as I'm also interested to see if they have any F-Fit Gaziano and Girling RTWs.

Merry X'mas!

I went to Chadstone and survived... I feel a bit dirty. I did a late night smash'n'grab.

Got some Polo Ralph Lauren Bradford linen trousers for $170. These are suit separates, the jacket was marked down to $700. Not bad value for a well tailored suit, not sure if they are half or fully canvassed. Compared to other Italian suits I have the Bradford cut had stronger/squarer shoulder pads and is begger around the neck and collar. However the fit across the chest is great (well it was for the 42 R and L) and its quite a tapered fit even if its only a drop 6.

The Polo shop (and indeed most of Chadstone ) was full of the stereotypical Hong-Kong label hounds. The guys in the queue in front of me in the Polo shop were about 24 years old, wearing Starter Baseball caps, Vans canvas sneakers and Polo jeans. LeCoste was packed.

I went to visit Country Road and they have a range of interesting cotton and seersucker ties in interesting and playful colours. Maybe have to investigate further, I don't think I've seen them in any other store.

David Jones menswear look like a bomb had hit it, especially the mens shirts and tie section... people can be such animals!

Anybody hit DJ's/Myer in Perth? Looked like a Beatles/Michael Jackson concert audience there.

Also, anybody know how much oxford-cloth PRL shirts are goin' for there? Probably should pick up a few...

There was a line a hundred long just to use each elevator. There are some good buys in the PRL section. I didn't see how the oxford-clothed shirts were effected by the sale. Might do that today.

Thank you Styleforum. Because of this site I now covet items not even available in Australia, let alone likely to go on sale here over Boxing Day.

Rather than scrumming with Asians to get to the deisgner tat they put on "sale" here (read reduce their markups on), I can now sit back and watch the Aussies get creamed in the cricket instead.

Then in February I can go crazy before the feds repeal the tax-free threshold on imports to support our uncompetitive retail sector!

Why in Feb? The duty we will pay on items under the threshold will only fund the staff to enforce it. Kinda pointless.

I got a pair of cotton navy micro houndstooth trousers for $59 from Saba, a royal blue RL custom fit polo for $39 and a casual purple tight thin stripe shirt from industrie for $25. Thats about it. Wanted to get navy/red knit tie from RL but its still $99 and thats from DFO. Those interesting wool ties from country road barely came down in price so meh.

Went to The Ralph Lauren factory outlet down the gold coast today. Some good prices on pretty much everything. I usually don't buy anything ralph lauren until they have their 50% sale. But this was much better. Classic polos down to $39.00. Button Down dress shirts. $49.00. Nicer dress shirts sans logo with mother of pearl buttons reduced to $69.00. Most trousers around the $59-69.00. Some pretty funky colors though. Reds, Blues, that kinda thing.

I bought about four shirts. All up about $200.00. So at an average $50.00 a shirt not bad.
