Despite what you might read on tumblr, wool jerseys aren't used by the pros anymore for good reason. For a 30km cafe ride, they are perfect. Not so much for a 120km hill session. But if your paying $150 for a set of gloves to look good at the local bunch ride cafe of choice you've got more money than sense.

The technical material is ok but holds a stink even after being washed and hung out in breeze. Wool absorbs nearly 30%+ of weight and doesn't stink even after two days wear.

On the bike in winter (more honoured in the breach this year) base layer = sekret cheapskate bike network = womens xl merino fine wool plain black long tights and black long sleeved top from Cottonworks (from memory) @ $20 each. Had them about 3 years now and aside from a few tears, and moth holes from storing in shed, are still fine.

True re the smell to an extent, I tend to find my running gear stinks more than cycling stuff though, I guess you sweat a lot more. I tend to wear the wool base layers for cold weather stuff like fishing when I'm not sweating. There's nothing I can't stand more than the smell of wet wool! That's why I shy away from it for cycling.

The cheaper tech stuff seems to smell more than the better gear I've found over the years. But at the end of the day, I see cycling gear as fairly disposable. Shorts wear through, you crash etc etc. if I get 2 years out of a pair of bibs I'm happy.

I got the email. It was an EDM, so everyone on the mailing list received an identical one. Don't worry, Journeyman - you weren't the only one.

The way the email was written, with its jocular tone, is just part and parcel of how Patrick (or whoever is in charge) presents the PJohnson brand. Same goes for the accessories, alongside the exaggerated fits they occasionally wear, the sneakers, and the generally relaxed nature of how they wear their own suiting, is just there to present a unique brand.

What will be/is interesting is whether this continued playfulness has deleterious business consequences for PJohnson as far as the more conservatively dressed segment of his customer base is concerned. I doubt it will, but who knows.

Sunny. Relaxed. Cheap & Cheerful. Nothing expensive. Nothing ironed. Washed, hung on line, folded, chucked in cupboard, pulled out, put on.
