I really don't like this method; it teaches you bad habits and I actually find them harder to use... I liken it working with a blunt knife. Then again I find say a merkur 39c (heavy slant), pretty tame.

not menswear related but boys-toys related just grabbed a yamaha soundbar on the cheap - cant wait to remove the clutter of speakers and cables from my theatre room!

Speaking of shoes, I'm wearing a pair of blue suede tassel loafers today, along with a pair of Nantucket red trousers, a navy knit tie with little white flecks, a white OCDB shirt and a mid-blue linen jacket in a glen plaid pattern.

No photos as yet, but hopefully I'll find the time to take some later in the day.

Aside from blue, what other color shoes would complement Nantucket red trousers?

Sometimes I wear them with a pair of "tobacco"-coloured, suede driving loafers, other times a pair of polo suede C&J Belgraves or a pair of chocolate brown suede Tramezza. A pair of chestnut calf shoes also go well.

Still stunned to hear Tie Rack going out of business. What is it?

Business model? They screwed the access to them a few years ago by playing around with the perfect existing system (I wrote to them about this and got brushed off by boffins).

Too much woman's wear? Getting away from the theme aka TieRack?

Quality? Has deteriorated and then getting involved with thin ties?

Simply not enough people wearing ties? The idiotic suit minus the tie look favoured especially in the building/development and IT sectors where everyone now works in town?

All of the above?

Re Nantucket red. It's gotta to be a washed out red. Some shades are like washed out reddish pink. The Landsend shorts are the colour but the pants I got are different and not a good colour.

Does anyone know who stocks Santoni shoes in Sydney or Melbourne?

I bought a wonderful pair of Santoni elastic-sided ankle boots at Harrold's in Sydney about 3 years ago, but haven't seen the brand in their store since.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on ties, quality and cost. Much appreciated. It is of course a trade off. I didn't order the tiebar.com stuff. Happened to be driving past the Birkenhead point MJ Bale sale shop a couple of hours ago and picked this up for $40.

Got a job interview on Tuesday. If I get the gig then I'll invest in a couple of HC's gorgeous wool 3 folds.

Thanks, JM. I can see all of those working well with Nantucket red. My gut feel is that suede works better than calf but again, chestnut calf would work.

Time to have some fun and experiment this weekend!

Anyone have recommendations for decent quality t-shirts and polos with a slim cut?

If you're ordering from overseas, Land's End make good, sturdy t-shirts and polo shirts, although their "tailored" fit is not baggy but not really slim.

If you happen to be travelling overseas, or if you are happy to use a proxy, then Uniqlo make good, staple t-shirts and polo shirts and they are pretty slim. Their button-down collar polo shirts are great.

MJ Bale make good, slim, polo shirts with "shirt" collars (rather than the ribbed collars common to most polo shirts) and they also have mother-of-pearl buttons. The Men's Shop website often seems to have a sale on MJ Bale polo shirts, with a discounted package deal.

I'm sure that others will chime in with some suggestions, too.

I reckon a mid grey calf/suede or black suede brogues would work too depending on your top half

or even Pjohnson calf boots would be sweet

I have Lacoste and Fred Perry polos that are slim cut. They are discounted at DJs pretty regularly for around $75, is this the sort of thing you mean, or are you after the higher end gear?

Where does it mention that they are going out of business?
