My Sam Hober grenadines arrived. They are awesome. My Meermins arrived as well but wifey wasn't home when they were delivered so I'll get them tomorrow.

Sam the shoe polisher in the Rialto told me that he can mirror shine shoes
but they would need to be left with him overnight. Not sure how much he charges but it's more than $10.
I know that some of you were looking for a service like this so if you do go down that route, let us know how it goes.

no other man should "touch" nor polish another men's shoes... not?

I think the guys in Richards and Richards do it well.  They seem genuinely interested and authentic in their approach. Would also add American Tailors to this category too.  Knowledgeable and authentic, something others would be good to learn.  I asked a fellow in Mitchell Ogilvies the other day if they had any Grenadine ties, was told what they had out was what they had and for me to have a look through.  I asked him did he know what a grenadine tie was....do I need to tell you what the response was???  Didnt think so.  Looks like an order with Henry C is well overdue.  Am waiting for Burgundy to arrive and will snaffle a navy too.

Personally I like the David Jones approach....not a SA in sight.  Suits me I know what I want and am well aware of my size.

Ideally, an SA should interact with each customer at least twice. Greet them in a friendly welcoming manner when they walk in the store but don't crowd them. Then, if they are browsing through something for more than a minute, ask if they can help with a size etc. If they say no, leave them alone. Obviously if they say yes, you go the extra mile to get them what they want, including looking at what's available in your other stores. Each SA should be responsible for a specific area (and the punters in that area), so you don't have 3 seperate SAs bothering the same customer in the space of 5 minutes.

This is the standard approach in most mid-level retail stores around the world. Lower end or mass market like Zara they won't interact with you unless you approach them, but at least the staff are omnipresent and in uniform (which is more than can be said for DJs where they run out the back as soon as someone comes within 30m) and will help you when you ask them to.

Higher end boutiques are the same the world over mostly - they hover around you like a silent fart and quite often when you actually are interested in purchasing something it becomes a team effort with about 5 people involved in the process (one to serve you, one to get different colours etc. from out back, one to wrap the item, one to stand behind you as you look at something else while they ring up the receipt, etc.) I do feel sorry for the SAs in those shops though, the boredom must be overwhelming and I'd probably want to talk to someone too after 6 hours of standing around by an empty fitting room.

I think DJs would be best off taking the Zara approach. Sure number 1 is the ideal scenario, but they need to start with small steps, like having people visably on the floor that can at least be approached when a customer does need help. Their penchant for concessions staffed by independent SAs working for the brands won't make it easy for them though.

It's named 'burnt orange' and is probably a little darker than the picture represents so it works well with a grey or blue suit and white shirt combo. Not terribly conservative business dress but it brightens up a Friday in the office.

SALES at David Jones have fallen for the sixth consecutive quarter but the chief executive, Paul Zahra, believes the rate of decline is stabilising as consumers become immune to volatility on overseas markets.

"There are fewer people shopping, but the ones that are are spending more," Mr Zahra said.

Those still spending stocked up on high-margin merchandise such as womenswear, accessories, beauty and menswear and, eschewed low-margin categories such as appliances and electronics, a trend that augurs well for gross margins in the second half.

The retailer is cutting back on the depth and volume of promotions before the sale to make the discounts on offer more compelling.

"We're trying to preserve the credibility of our clearance. When everything is on sale all the time, customers have a sense of fatigue and don't know what's truly on sale or not," Mr Zahra said

The ground floor of that building would be a great space for a Uniqlo...
