r.e. Trousers - why not get them made up? Then you can specify exactly how you want them cut, fabric, etc.. As well as a couple of bespoke suits, I have had some lovely trousers made up at Matthew Lawrence's place in Paddington. Think I paid around $180 a pair. Also try a decent tailors. I have a suit in for alterations at M&R Tailors on York St at the moment and he seemed very knowledgeable (but I haven't got my suit back so can't vouch for them yet).
You will want to start a relationship with a good tailors, so getting a pair of trousers made up is a decent way to start.

Loake 1880's - They run a little large for me too. Can't comment on Meermins.

On another note, I hit up the Melbourne MJ Bale 'lane-way' sale this morning before stepping into the office, here's the run down:

  • Suits started from $399. Most suits were $450, although I was told there was 'a couple' floating round for $350.
  • Heaps of odd jackets, starting from $250 of varying styles (generally the majority had flapped pockets) - plenty of the green Xavier jacket's, plus a few of the summer light blue jackets from this season.
  • Not much in the trouser department, only a couple of styles that I can't imagine going down too well here.
  • Polos were $30 each, $50 for two and $70 for three. T-shirts were similarly priced (maybe slightly cheaper).

Yes I also went down, I don't have much to add other than I was hoping for a slightly better discount than the $450 for most suits, which isn't much of a saving over the 2 for 1K deal, or the recent 30% off sale they had.

I think the $250 jackets are the best thing there.

WRT a Melbourne Meetup, I am in town all week starting the 18th so would be keen to meet you all - I am playing the Australian Open so don't know what point I will be occupied with that until, but later in the week would be great if you could be so kind as to accomodate me.

On a similar topic, has anyone ever been into Emmanuel Dakis on Chapel Street, Melbournet? I wonder if it might be a good place for this sort of thing and would love to hear of any experiences. It is just up the road from me so I should really front up and visit myself but he is usually shut when I pass on the weekend.

what type of fabric and cut did you get in the trousers from Matthew Lawrence? this is the tailor in Williams st Paddington?

Yes, Williams St. Really nice chap.

Standard flat front suit type trousers, belt loops, no cuffs. I'm a bit funny about pockets, but hard to describe. I guess I like them big enough to take my wallet, nothing more, but just long enough that it doesn't fall out if I happen to slouch when sitting. Lightweight worsted (can't recall details), a brown and a grey. Summer trousers for when I can't bring myself to wear a suit.

I'd like a pair with fishtails made up next....

Hey all fellow Aussies. I've got a pair of Bally Scribes up for sale to fit US10.5-US11D. Wore them for 1 hour, they're basically brand new. Asking $250 including shipping in Australia.

These are really nice, unfortunately not my size.  Solid no nonsense high quality and elegant, like wearing an Audi/Benz on your feet.
